View Full Version : My first drive with the ScanGuage!
MT bucket 08-04-2008, 10:18 PM I Got the SG today, put it in and followed the instructions, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be, everything seemed to work right away. Got my setups done, and first fill up, then i could not resist, I have to go do some driving and see what happens.
Very interesting!!
I tried these four for the first drive MPG, GPH, RPM,LOD
I just did RPM tonite because I wanted to see if it would be about the same as my tach, it was pretty close, cool!
MPG, now this is where it got interesting. I definitely had a wide range of numbers! some really high ones when coasting, and tiny ones when trying to accelerate on a incline! (0 if I have the motor on at a stop. I know that one is accurate:p)
It seems I do have a cutoff, if I coast in gear it will go to 9999mpg and 0 gph until rpms get lower.
LOD, that was interesting too. I want to use this one to learn the most efficient way to accelerate. I heard that 75 is the best, higher and it wastes gas? I could have misunderstood though.
If that is true, I am still accelerating too fast, I was getting up into the 80s and 90s espeacially on an incline, Uh oh!
Well, I drove around some highways, roads, and city streets, about 35 miles and checked my average, 29.4 mpg.
:)
Then later in the evening I needed to get the Mitu. back from the shop, got a friend to help and we took my van, he dropped me off to get the car and drove my van back to the house.
I don't think he drove too fast, I got home only a minute after he did. but I went later and checked my mpg, it was down to 24.6 !
I wonder what he could have done to bring it down that much in 7 miles! Oh well, I am not gonna say anything, he was nice enough to help, and I really didn't have the energy to ride my bycycle tonite:rolleyes:
He was interested and asked a couple of questions about it however...
Is there any was of knowing if these readings are accurate? Do I have to wait till fillup time and compare?
Thats all for now, more questions coming soon I bet!:D
MT
UPDATE :
I was looking at the current trip, that is where I got the 24.6 reading. Oooops! Not so bad for a nonhyper in my old van I guess, he still beat the epa.
the day of 45 miles was actually 26.7 mpg, so the damage wasn't that bad. :D
Right Lane Cruiser 08-04-2008, 10:27 PM Oh boy -- you are in for a world of fun, Michael!
Be sure to adjust the fuel cutoff value -- it is defaulted to a value that may not be appropriate for your vehicle.
You won't be able to get the gauge totally dialed in until you've been though a few fill ups, but you can definitely calibrate the distance right away. There is a setting for speed -- that's the one that will let you adjust the distance to match your ODO. Since time is independent, the distance and speed will scale in a 1:1 fashion. Go out for a decent length drive, compare the SG distance reading for your trip with what your trip ODO shows, then divide to get the percentage.
If you said your ODO doesn't work (does it? I don't recall?), you can do what I did and carefully map out a route using http://maps.google.com and http://www.mapmyrun.com -- the second one is better as if you are patient enough you can plot around corners and through lane changes to get very precise results. Compare to what the SG says and you can sync those up. That's how I discovered my Elantra ODO is 2.1% low.
Good luck and have fun! :D
MT bucket 08-04-2008, 10:53 PM Oh I need to do a few fill ups? what about when I want to try it in a friends car, it wont work right? or does it work good for all cars once it is "dialed in"?
I will try the distance thing, my trip ODO does work, its the older mechanical style though.
if there is a descrepancy, how will I know which one is correct though?
am I right about the LOD or is that not dialed in?
Oh my! I don't know if I should have this thing on while I am working, I could get in trouble :p

Right Lane Cruiser 08-05-2008, 07:08 AM The calibrations you are doing are specific to your vehicle. You can always keep a record of what your correct settings are (once you figure them out) and then when you put it in another car you just reset the parameters for that car (engine size, speed offset, DFCO trigger point). For now, just assume your ODO is the correct one and calibrate to that... since you've been using that for your tank distances anyway, right?
As long as your engine displacement is set correctly your load reading should be right -- and yes, you want to keep it in the 75-80% range.

MT---Yes, right!

----cool, the reason I asked is in my ride along with you you really could step on it pretty good to get up to 75, wheras my van seems to get up to 75 alot easier, I guess it is because it is a bigger vehicle, but I thought the bigger engine would equal that out.
----Also mine doesnt work without the engine on, is this normal? I have to start to get it to turn on, and it goes off soon after I shut off.
thanks

Right Lane Cruiser 08-05-2008, 07:24 AM Michael, it sounds as though you need to set the fuel type to "hybrid" -- that will keep it on when the engine is off but the ignition switch is in the "on" position.
Yes, my Elantra has about 130hp from a 2.0L 4 cylinder... frankly it is oversized for the car (~2620lbs) and I can choose my gears. ;)

-----OK, I will try that, it won't effect my reading eh?

----yeah, I hear you, I hate ATs, I happened to get this van for free, so I can't complain. I would like to find a small pickup with a 4 cyl and 5 spd manual to replace this thing when it hits the junk heap. that could be today, or 250,000 miles to go, who knows:confused::p
I do kind of like the challenge though, if this thing can be hypermiled anything can be! :D
Right Lane Cruiser 08-05-2008, 11:32 AM The only thing the Hybrid setting does is configure the gauge to expect that there are times when the engine will be off but the car itself is still booted up. This makes sense for hybrids as they often turn their engines off, but it also makes sense for anyone who is FASing a vehicle (essentially the same situation and for the same reason, right?).
I know what you mean about the challenge -- I view my wife's Escape that way. ;)
MT bucket 08-05-2008, 09:08 PM My ScanGuage worked good today almost too good ;), the hybrid setting helped keep it from shutting off on forced auto stops. cool, now I can play around with it at long lights:).
everything seems to be right on. the trip distance matched up perfectly with my trip ODO!
I think the MPGs are pretty close, I set up a guage for average MPG for the day. seemed to be pretty close to what my van gas guage indicates.
I really had alot of hills and lights to contend with on my runs today. if I have to go up a hill from a stop, it just is ungodly how that thing sucks the fuel!
I get some back on the other side coasting ice on, but not always enough to break even. I tried coasting down with ice off a couple of times, that gains back alot! Unfortunatly, not supposed to do that with my transmission! I will try top resist, but it is good info to have, for when i am driving a stick.
I need to figure out up hills, I didn't relise how bad they were for me!
No more ignorant bliss haha I am learning what hurts and what helps, I really got my work cut out for me to hit 30, but we will see :)
here are my averages after most of my runs. 190 miles total driven

Right Lane Cruiser 08-05-2008, 09:17 PM Lookin' good there, Michael!
Hi Michael:
___If there was anyone on the forum that would enjoy a ScanGauge more then you, I do not know who it is :D
___Good Luck and keep your eyes on the road, ok ;)

You bet! The only thing that would be more fun would be
a flux capacitor!

I don't know if my battery can put out 1.21 gigawatts though!
