While doing a google search for stuff on the ongoing Obama/McCain tire preasure discussion I stumbled across this article out of Carnegie Mellon University. Save Gas, Money and the Environment with Properly Inflated Tires. (http://www.cmu.edu/cmnews/extra/050921_tire.html)

What made it interesting was the part that said:

"Based on the assumption that the optimum air pressure for fuel efficiency was the maximum air pressure stated on the tires' sidewall, the four tires of each car were under-inflated by a total average of 20%. Only one of the 81 had the proper air pressure. (The suggested air pressure stated in owner's manuals is based on passenger comfort, not necessarily fuel efficiency.)"

One of the few places that seems to question if the recommended pressure is the most fuel efficient and perfectly willing to assume that the tire should be inflated to the sidewall number.

It is not a new piece dating from September 2005.

Fantastic find. We need to ensure this is maintained in a archive somewhere.
