View Full Version : wife's 00 explorer
chilimac02 07-23-2008, 04:53 PM So my wife's 00 explorer doesn't seem to like shifting into neutral. I'm not doing it at all now. In fact, when you shift into neutral, then kill the engine, the speedometer goes nutz when you restart the engine. Any ideas as to why?
The car seems to coast exceptionally well. Does it cut the fuel off when coasting in 5th gear?
Right Lane Cruiser 07-24-2008, 01:42 PM Is the vehicle flat towable? If not, you should try to FAS it but you can coast in neutral with then engine still running.

My explorer won't let you do that either. You will get a check engine light and the engine will stall for the next few days.
I finally accepted its only capable of DWL style hpermiling. I've gotten 2 tanks over 30 mpg but mid's to upper 20's is fairly easy.

Mine doesn't, it continues to swallow down the gas.
chilimac02 07-25-2008, 12:16 AM Aether Glider, thanks for the response. I'm impressed at your mileage on the explorer with 4WD!!!! Surely my 2wd could get close with some practice... thanks!!
Aether glider 07-25-2008, 12:39 AM Do you have a scanguage? If not low 20's is about all i could get without one.
DWL is the way to go.
chilimac02 08-04-2008, 07:46 PM got the SGII today. It'll be in my honda for my commutes. But when I'm driving my wife's explorer, it will be with me there...
chilimac02 08-27-2008, 11:42 PM Put the Sg in the explorer tonight for a 78mi commute to pick up a dresser for my daughter. With only Dwl, I was able to do 28mpg round trip. Not too shabby for the first try, huh?
Aether glider 08-28-2008, 12:23 AM Your on your way now! This is what works for me. DWL with TPS of 22 is the sweet spot. Usually going about 42 mph. TPS 21 is too slow usually around 35-38 in my terrain.
Hold TPS 21 or 22 as long as possible you will be in the low 40mpg to high 30mpg range.
With these vehicles idling and stop and go traffic is a FE killer.
chilimac02 09-01-2008, 10:53 PM I noticed the A/C barely made any difference to the engine LOD value displayed on my SgII. it went from 33 (no A/C) to 35 (full blast A/C).
My honda goes from like 25 to 50...
Is this the same result you've seen, or was that some kind of fluke?
Aether glider 09-02-2008, 02:38 PM Not sure. I haven't turned it on in months. I"ll take a look tomorrow and see if i get similar results.
chilimac02 09-09-2008, 10:39 PM I couldn't tell when the AC was on or off (at least MPG wise). I had no idea 32mpg was achievable in this thing. I like it more and more with age...
chilimac02 09-10-2008, 02:47 PM I'm thinking if this thing was FAS capable, I could do 40mpg in it!!
BTW, if you tap the OD off button when you exit the hwy and slowing down, it will kick the engine into Dfco. This helped me a little bit.
chilimac02 03-13-2009, 01:24 AM Cold weather has sucked the MPG right out of me.
I took off the luggage rack and the antennae just to try and win back some MPG. Normally, I love winter, but I'm thinking springtime needs to come on and warm up!!

Me too, I'm considering reevaluating my favorite season.
chilimac02 03-16-2009, 12:22 AM I don't have any hard data, but it sure seemed easier to pull 25mpg for a 325mi trip this weekend, now that I have the luggage rack off.
