View Full Version : Suggestion: Bicycling/human-powered sub-forum
BailOut 07-21-2008, 04:40 PM Bicycling and other forms of human-powered transportation alternatives have become a popular topic lately (or should I say again?), and at this point we actually have more full time and part time cyclists than EV owners.
As such I suggest we offer a sub-forum for the involved and/or interested folks.
Nanci 07-21-2008, 04:47 PM I'd be very interested in that!

msirach 07-21-2008, 04:50 PM A Twike (http://www.twike.com/)was at Hybridfest. I think it would qualify.
mparrish 07-21-2008, 04:56 PM I'm building a motorized mountain bike to replace our SUV. I may park a write-up in this new forum when I'm done?
Anybody else doing something like this, out of curiosity?
Electric bike may be next, if the gas bike is successful. :)

The gas bike will get 100-150mpg when lit on a flat road @ 25mph. Surely we can get that up to 200mpg. ;)
mrchuc 07-21-2008, 07:34 PM I definitely would like to see such a sub-forum. I am currently working on motorizing a bicycle, hoping to get 130 mpg commuting to work.
I also have a Giant E-Suede electric assist bike, but it's range is limited and it is a bit slow. Very dependable and lots of fun, however. And, of course, very efficient.
Of course, I also have a plain bike. Every mile I ride it is the best savings of all.:Banane06:
Bike123 07-21-2008, 11:14 PM The good thing about not having a bike forum is that bikes come up on various threads and remind people that it is possible to get places without using a car. Overall, I think a bike forum would be good, so long as we still feel free to ask, "Do we really need a car to go 1 mile?" in other forums.
Nanci, I think you easily qualify as the longest distance biker here. What is the longest daily commute you would be willing to do on a bike?
Nanci 07-22-2008, 04:28 AM My problem with commuting on my bike is I have to be at work at 6:30 AM, so to go my 17 miles, I'd be a bit late leaving at 5:30, and the ride in would be done in the dark. 12 miles- I'd be riding. I am not sure why five measley miles are intimidating me. I've ridden home for days in a row when my exFSP was in the shop. Every time I ride my bike lately, though, when I get to 17 miles I think to myself, that's how long it'd take to ride to work.
nd4speed7 07-22-2008, 05:46 AM You could hypermile half way and then ride your bike to work the rest.
lamebums 07-24-2008, 12:32 AM I agree. I think we should have a "People Powered" subforum where we can talk about bicycles, walking, etc.
After all isn't turning the key supposed to be the answer of last resort?
efusco 07-24-2008, 12:51 AM I'm for this...we purchased one of the EZRide ebikes (http://ebike-world.com/) (the e-scooter actually) at HF and it should be arriving sometime mid-August.
Me taking a spin!

Right Lane Cruiser 07-24-2008, 07:58 AM Evan, what is the range and speed of those things?

Nanci 07-25-2008, 06:28 AM Commuted 18 miles by bike today!! It was very enjoyable except for the 100% humidity and the four miles of pitch dark with no bike lane (and every car that passed me was a pickup, but they all moved over to the other lane). I _did_ find a nice place 10 miles from home that would be perfect for park and ride.
efusco 07-25-2008, 08:37 AM Evan, what is the range and speed of those things?
To remain qualified as a bicycle it is governed to 20mph or less...the one we got is supposed to be a little over 19mph. They claim "up to" 30 mile range....but I'm a bit skeptical without some serious hypermiling and continuous pedalling to keep the battery charged.
Our intended use is for a maximum of about 10 miles round trip to the local town for quick errands and such.
