My SG came in last Friday and I installed it and did the initial configuration (tank=13 gallons, fuel=gas, engine=1.8 etc...) and tanked up. I filled up today and before the fill SG reported that I used 4.31 gallons. I filled and stopped at the click/shut off and 4.53 gallons went in, a .22 difference, not too bad in my opinion. I'll do another fill or two to the "click/shut off "and see if the numbers are close. If not I'll either tweak the SG % or fill past the click/shut off. If anyone here has the same car & SG let me know what you're doing.

This was my 6th fill since getting the car and my combined MPG has gone from 33 to 38. My tires are at 44psi, I coast when I can, accelerate downhill and draft, that's the extent of my HM skills. My 24 mile one-way New England commute is a 50/50 mix of hilly country roads and hilly highway driving. I happy with my 38mpg for that commute and have noticed better numbers on a couple of further highway runs.

Also on the highway while watching the instant MPG I've noticed that if I slightly give it some throttle and back off, "pulse" if you will and keep that cycle going the MPG increases... Has anyone noticed this. Sorry I'm a nOOb to all this HM stuff.

tank=13 gallons

Ming,

I don't know how much a difference it will make, but the Civic specs say the gas tank is 13.2 gallons.

Great job getting to 38, it looks like I have the same car you do, but with a manual transmission. So far my best tank has been 36.7 MPG.

Yea my Civic is 13.2, plus there is the 1- 1.5 gallons extra space for expansion, its a safety thing. But congrats on the improved MPG, i was getting about 29-31 until I started little hypermiling techniques

I use to fill mine right up for full top off. Could get 15+ gallons in it.

With the SG you can't put in 13.2 gallons it whole numbers only. SO I entered the 13 then I can make a % adjustment.

Thanks for your input guys!

how fast are you driving (top end)? My 01 Accord EX will get a little over 40mpg by cruising and coasting at 55mph. It's slow, but the F/E works out better. My city tanks have yielded about 32mpg. I turn the engine off at red lights, etc.

Chili, top end no more than 70, normally between 55-65 depending on the flow.

Hey Ming,

Well I have the same car as you do, though mine is a 5MT. My first tank with the dealer fill up I was able to get 38MPG, my drive is about 80% highway and 20% city, hilly terrain at spots. My second tank I was able to get 42MPG with shutting off at lights, nice-on and driving 50-55MPH on the interstate. I also use DWL when possible for the hills. I don't have a ScanGauge though plan on getting one but when I save the money for it. I used to FAS but after a scare going down a hill and having to break suddenly for a stop light I have eased the FASing a bit, not sure how much difference it will do on my MPG, hopefully not too much. I also run at 44PSI (max sidewall) my next goal is 50. I was also able to go 18 days without filling up compared to my 5 -7 days with my '99 Taurus.

Overall you will get impressive numbers with your civic, you can even get the same as what a typical non-hypermiler driving a Prius gets, that is the case with a guy at work that owns one and gets 42MPG.

Good luck.
