View Full Version : CleanMPG's Reply: A Safe Approach to Fuel Conservation
Chuck 07-14-2008, 12:22 PM CleanMPG responds to recent negative articles and press releases (http://www.sunherald.com/prnewswire/story/682428.html)
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/501/CMPG.gifCleanMPG - July 14, 2008
Chicago - Anticipating the present fuel crisis and troubled by the political and environmental consequences of the US' huge consumption of oil, a group formed three years ago to find ways to increase the fuel efficiency of existing vehicles in the US. The founder, Wayne Gerdes, coined the term "hypermiling": exceeding the EPA's MPG standards. He established CleanMPG.com as a forum to discuss and improve fuel conservation methods, and to educate others about these methods.
Safety has always trumped fuel economy at CleanMPG. Drafting has been disavowed on safety grounds alone. Rolling through stop signs or red lights has never been presented as a fuel-saving practice. The group repeatedly advises drivers to evaluate for themselves whether a given method is safe for them and their particular vehicle. Drivers are also advised to implement only one new method at a time, and to test each in a safe setting before utilizing it in general driving conditions....http://www.sunherald.com/prnewswire/story/682428.html
dare2be 07-14-2008, 12:31 PM Expect the hits on this site to skyrocket. Maybe we should start a pool on how long it takes for the number of members to double. :)
Vooch 07-14-2008, 12:33 PM if Wayne thought he was busy before.....................
ikea4532 07-14-2008, 12:45 PM very nice, i like the write up. hey wayne did you mean to give your phone number out like that? you will be taking calls up to next year! well anyway very nice work.
Expect the hits on this site to skyrocket. Maybe we should start a pool on how long it takes for the number of members to double. :)
If this article is on target expect the site to get hammered from Europe.
Right now the Europeans are paying about 62.5 cents on the dollar for oil.
If the Euro and the Dollar hit parity the Europeans are going to see over 50% increase in fuel costs. E1.42 per liter today is going to look like a bargain compared to E2.27 per liter.
That would be E8.60 per U.S. gallon.
July 14 (Bloomberg) -- For three years euro bulls used the prospect of higher interest rates in Europe to justify the currency's 32 percent rally against the dollar. No more.
A growing number of the world's biggest investors say a slowdown in the region's economy may be more severe than in the U.S., forcing the European Central Bank to reverse this month's rate increase. By January, the euro will be lower against the dollar, yen and even the pound, according to the median estimate of strategists surveyed by Bloomberg. Bill Gross, manager of the world's biggest bond fund, turned bearish on the euro for the first time since the currency's inception in 1999.
``We might have hit a point where the euro doesn't have a lot to stand on,'' said Emanuele Ravano, co-head of European strategy in London for Gross's Pacific Investment Management Co., which runs the $129 billion Pimco Total Return Fund. ``The euro is ultimately very overvalued. It could be quite a bit lower at some point in time over the next couple of years.''

bestmapman 07-14-2008, 01:06 PM I can hear the phone ringing from here, and the clicking of the new member section. This should generate a lot of interest.
MaxxMPG 07-14-2008, 01:06 PM Outstanding! Well presented, concise and even upbeat. I can't wait to see the "Start Your Journey Here" board explode in the next week or two as new members arrive.
dare2be 07-14-2008, 01:19 PM I can hear the phone ringing from here, and the clicking of the new member section. This should generate a lot of interest.
Wayne, have you shut off your phone yet? :)
DocOc 07-14-2008, 01:23 PM hope the server can take it
btw, thats how runs on currency start, through speculation. but it will be a cold day in the nether world when the euro will be on par with the USD
p3t3blair 07-14-2008, 01:23 PM Awesome article. Now hopefully people will actually read it and understand.
Hi All:
___I do not expect the CleanMPG release to make as big a splash as I would have hoped but it will make an interesting read for some of the journalists that were on the fence wrt what Hypermiling is all about. The 20 to 100% above the EPA is enough to shake the stupidity out of some I hope :)
___More than likely the bad press will simply lay off because they have been exposed. Or not???
___My phone number was supposed to be hidden other than for journalists and editors. Oh #*&*!
___Good Luck
___Wayne
dare2be 07-14-2008, 01:39 PM FWIW: The PR shows up on a Google search only on 4 sites, and the only one with your phone number is the Biloxi Sun Herald. Hopefully your phone number exposure is minimal. Too bad the PR exposure hasn't been very widespead. I think you should demand the money back :) The other sites from the google search are:
EarthTimes.org
StreetInsider.com
MarketWatch.com
gershon 07-14-2008, 01:43 PM Keep in mind, the AAA article took weeks before it spread to other papers. I'd expect ours to do the same.
The people who send out the newswire have no control over who uses it. What I might suggest is we each send an email to our local paper asking that they run it.

Hi Dare2Be:
___The Press release was sent out less than 3 hours ago so I am not to concerned with distribution just yet… PRNewswire is about the biggest press release site we have available to us here in the US and thus the choice. It was not-inexpensive of course but thanks to the membership as a whole, the overall expense was reduced via the donations and PRNewswire is about the best medium we have to get the word out.
___I just had a 20-minute interview with a reporter from Montreal, Canada about the AAA non-sense in fact. I am not sure how he picked it up as it was supposed to be US only press release ;)
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Chuck 07-14-2008, 02:18 PM Wayne,
The second Google hit was in the UK. :)

Glad to see this. I really hope it boosts the general public's concern.
philmcneal 07-14-2008, 05:24 PM very well said wayne, you were number 1 for a reason. haha
A024523 07-14-2008, 05:31 PM Well done and a great collaborative effort! Thanks to everyone who contributed their efforts and donations, especially Wayne! It feels good to have that rebuttal out there, truely a score against ignorance.
Hi All:
___To add some reality here, this one was first written up by John Flory (Lightfoot) and with a number of edits including Msirach’s wife, the final version went up today ;)

owlmaster08 07-14-2008, 07:23 PM Wow, that's a lot of sites...
In the electrical trades we have a saying that goes thus: If you can't work safely, you can't work. That should go for driving as well, and that's one thing I especially like about this forum.
As for drafting, it's just way too stressful; and besides, you don't get to see the bucolic countryside or the serene city.
And obviously, Wayne has put a ton of work into this project.
DocOc notes above that the euro dollar will never surpass the US dollar. However, the Bible, while many people discount it, notes that there will be one world currency; a logical result of globalization. In theological circles, it's thought that that will be the euro dollar.
Faithful and True.
msirach 07-14-2008, 10:06 PM I see it's on the WSJ's Marketwatch (http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/hypermiling-safe-approach-fuel-conservation/story.aspx?guid=%7B5E002D2F-7D48-4158-8978-CBA86313921C%7D&dist=hppr)website.
sailordave 07-14-2008, 11:38 PM What gets me about the whole AAA thing is their (AAA) tips on improving mpg are so small and minor as to be almost useless. The things I've done have increased my mpg by 5 or more and they're all free, no installing of gadgets, and no voiding any warranty. I don't see a single fuel saving product on the market that can give you that kind of fuel saving in reality (though some do make the claim that they can't back up with fact). Even if you use only a few of the tips here and save 3 to 4 mpg, that adds up to quiet a savings in the long run. Now if only we could get USA Today or some other major newspaper to cover this the way this paper did.
Oh, by the way,...one of my neighbors has an early 1970s model Caddy sedan she's trying to sell real cheap. Anyone want to buy this black smoke blower?

Scrap it! :P hehe
JusBringIt 07-15-2008, 05:10 AM Hypermiling FTW! ...the explosion should come soon..wait for it....wait for it....
