I drive a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am SE 4 cylander with an automatic transmission. Does anyone know whether it is safe (on the Transmission) to coast with the engine off? I do this when I have a long downhill coast to a stop sign or light but I want to make sure I am not damaging my transmission or engine.

Thanks,
Kevin

Check your manual, it will say something about flat towing or dinghy towing. According to the 2002 Dinghy Towing Guide (http://www.motorhomemagazine.com/dinghytowingguide/), the answer is yes at a max speed of 65 MPH.

Thanks Kirk!

The Dinghy guide is a great resource. It has gone in my "Automotive" favorites and I will be sure to consult it before my next car purchase.

Thanks again,
Kevin

No problem. I would consider buying a manual for your next car purchase. Sure there's a bit of a learning curve, but they can all be FASed, you get bump starts, shift points of your choosing, and it's more fun to drive! Of course if there are other people that drive your car (wife), it might not go over well...
