Yesterday, Leon James asked me for some inputs on hypermiling and he wrote the following article:

http://www.drdriving.org/#hyper2

Overall, he makes some good points. One point I think can be addressed more is positive discussion on our effects on other drivers. Sometimes hypermiling CAN disrupt the flow, such as if I'm coasting slowly and someone behind me is signalling for a right turn. Then I'm happy to speed up and let them go on their way.

The tone of the article is generally positive and a genuine effort for understanding.

Leon has been getting into the hypermiling concept from the point of view of our effect on other traffic. He said that hypermilers need to study our effect on other traffic. So I made a couple of videos on my motorcycle yesterday.

The first is on I-25 between Ft. Collins and Denver. The speedlimit was 75, but I hung out in the right lane at 65 mph. (It has a "Swift ending")

Two lanes on interstate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8AT339vUhc)

The second video was through Denver where I stayed in the right lane at the speedlimits which were 55 and 60.

Through Denver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWlxtNjR0G4)

Notice how smooth the traffic flow is in both videos.

I get about 57 mpg on the interstate with my Burgman 650 just by getting the speed down a bit. Over 60 on secondary roads. Most people get 50 or less although the range varies widely.
