that coasting (with engine off, out of gear) is illegal? Just curious, since it gets me about 3-6 extra mpg...

As such, there may be different rules from state-to-state. hobbit 07-07-2008, 08:02 PM It's a legacy law from when brakes and syncromesh didn't work nearly as well and people were more apt to "lose control" of a coasting car. There is no need for these laws nowadays, especially since they're impossible to enforce and there are many times when any car is effectively "in neutral" anyways, and it's time they just went away.
