I put a catch can in my 93 Voyager today. I figured why not. I went with a cheap eBay model. While installing it I noticed how poorly my PCV system was setup. It amounted to a PCV valve on a 5-6 inch hose running strait down into the intake.
I replaced the valve, a bunch of hose and changed how the valve was mounted (instead of laying on it's side pointing down it now stands straight up)
I then added the catch can and a clear fuel filter after the can so I can see if it's working.
I must have fixed a vacuum leak in the process because my idle smoothed out. Either that or I was sucking a ton of junk into the intake.

What is this and why did you install it?

I was going to ask the same question. What is a catch can and what benefit do you get?

I catch can is designed to catch and hold oil that's being drawn into your intake from the PCV valve. This oil gets mixed with your fuel and supposedly can gum up your valves and lower the octane rating of your fuel.

Good mod,
Just remember, there are normally 2 hoses, a vent and a PCV. I would do this to both lines.
I use oil separators for air compressors, I've found them at home inprovemt stores for $9-$19 depending on the material.

There is a filter inside the breather that cleans the air going into the engine/valve cover. As long as this is kept clean/replaced normally I don't see any advantage in adding a 2nd catch can.

On many newer Fords, they've deleted the filter, it is a straight run of tubing on both sides, only the PCV valve is in one.

My van does run better now. I don't think it has much if anything to do with my catch can at this point. I've only driven like 50 miles with it.
During the coarse of installing it I'm guessing I ended up repairing something I didn't know was bad. Bad vacuum hose, PVC valve or just changing the way the PCV valve sets on the valve cover. To me the $27 I paid for the can was well worth the the money.
There is noway I would have dropped $180 on it.
