View Full Version : MIMA update
Mike Dabrowski 2000 06-16-2008, 04:26 PM The new MIMA systems final configuration is beginning to shape up.
The system price will be slightly higher than before, but will include the new mini discrete display. Final price will be determined once the boards and harnesses are built.
The second Joystick will still be offered.
The standard included display will be the mini discrete.
The bicolor and standard discrete will be available instead, while I have stocks of the PC boards.
The FAS option price will drop, as I am making a PC board for smaller relays, so the construction labor will be much less.
The harness will be offered in two versions.
The plug in version and the hard wired (solder connection) version. The cost of the plug in version will be more than the hardwired version due to the added parts and labor.
Still lots to do, but progress is finally being made.
The waiting list is up to 43 systems out of the 50 that I was planning to build, so I will be ordering for 100 systems.
The new harness and waiting for subcontractors is going to delay things some more, so realistically I am looking at August and into September. :(
I thank all of the patient people on the waiting list.
bestmapman 06-16-2008, 04:31 PM Hi Mike,
Have you ever competed in a fuel economy challenge like at Hybridfest with your car?
Chuck 06-16-2008, 04:32 PM Hi Mike,
Have you ever competed in a fuel economy challenge like at Hybridfest with your car?I think he got 122mpg on the first challenge in 2006.
Mike Dabrowski 2000 06-16-2008, 05:01 PM Yes I have competed in a few.
In 2006, I had just upgraded the e-wheel motor and was not comfortable with using it for extended runs, so I only used it once or twice. I also got lost several times in the race.
I got 127 MPG in a competition in Ipswitch MA.
If I were to compete now, I could do the whole 20 mile course with the e-wheel, and use no gas at all, which would not be a fair contest.
When not using the e-wheel, which only has a 30 MPH max speed, I tend to try and go with the traffic flow, and do not do much P&G, so if speed is not considered in the scoring, a good P&G driver can usually beat my MPG, as seen in the scores.
MIMA is good for 10-20% MPG improvement, and allows faster speeds while attaining high MPG.
Randall (Highwater) Burkhalter is a hypermiler with MIMA. His You tube interview is a good way to get a feeling as to the possibilities.

Mike Dabrowski 2000 06-23-2008, 10:44 PM Encouraged by a steady increase in interest in MIMA. :D
Waiting list:

I will be offering MIMA as a full plug in this time, no more wire cutting, splicing, pin popping, just pull out the four MCM harness plugs, plug the MIMA adapter plugs into the MCM, then plug the stock harness back into the header, do the same at the ECM, and you are wired.
Details:

A big investment in inventory is required since the pins and connectors are only available in large quantities, so tell your friends that were afraid of all the wiring that MIMA will be a plug in from now on. :woot:
ericbecky 06-24-2008, 09:08 AM o.k. Mike, this may be a dumb question... but is there a way to for us to retrofit our current "pin popping" MIMA setups to "plug n' play"?
Mike Dabrowski 2000 06-24-2008, 10:34 AM I was not planning to build extra harnesses, and have not finished the new harness design, so I can't say how possible it will be to add the plug in ends to the present harness.
In a week when I finalize the design and make sure that I can get all the pieces that will be required, I will have a better idea as to the options.
atlaw4u 06-24-2008, 10:38 AM Mike, please describe the FAS option including pricing and can it be installed without MIMA.
Mike Dabrowski 2000 06-24-2008, 10:52 AM The new FAS will be a small board about 1.5" X 2" It will be potted, and have wires coming out like the present FAS. It will likely have the pin popping connectors like the present harness if purchased separately.
Still too early to say what the price will be.
Mike Dabrowski 2000 07-26-2008, 02:53 PM The plug in adapters have to fit in the limited area available in the MCM and ECM areas. Since so many MIMA owners, and people on the waiting list are technically skilled, I invite them to follow the new plug in harness design blog ,
http://www.99mpg.com/resources/articlesandblogs/themimapluginharne/
and contribute their input.
I will be designing in an area on the distribution board that will allow MIMA expansion, so we can add other features like the LCD display, PC interface, and other I/O.
Each of the three plug in boards will be discussed in the blog before finalizing.
Mike Dabrowski 2000 08-19-2008, 09:24 AM Things are starting to come together. I have 60 finished MIMA boards in house, the plug in harness boards are at the fab house being built, The pins are on the way to the harness shop for attachment to #20 wires, The temperature boards, display boards, and FAS boards are mostly built and tested.
I need to build a harness tester for the new plug in harness, so I can 100% test the system and harness here.
I have decided that offering a "hardwired" harness", is not a good idea, for several reasons. See:
http://www.99mpg.com/mima/buymima/
The design of the new harness will open up the system for many new possible enhancements via the distribution board approach.

Best of all, the price increase for the new harness may not be as large as I originally anticipated, but I will not be able to firm that up until I actually build some of the complete systems.;)
Chuck 08-19-2008, 10:11 AM Mike,
Last Saturday, I gave a MIMA demonstration in Dallas. Guy named Eric drove a red Insight restored from the junkyard from Austin 300 miles south. Gave him a good feel for it and offered to let him drive in a parking lot, but would not (because he hates to let others drive his car therefore felt like he would be violating my car - but it would not have bothered me).
He enjoyed the ride and has a better idea of what his Insight will be like when MIMA is installed.
Mike Dabrowski 2000 08-19-2008, 11:49 AM Cool!
I am planing to make a MIMA demo video for You tube soon, which I hope will clearly show how the system works, and demonstrate how to use it. It must be difficult for people to understand how moving the hybrid control from the stock computer to the driver could make a 10-20% improvement in MPG, so I will just have to show them.
Mike Dabrowski 2000 01-28-2009, 05:51 PM I will be flying out to DFW area on Feb 6 to attend a MIMA install party and insight owners gathering.
We will be starting the installs on Saturday morning Feb 7 .
Any Insighters within range are invited to join the gathering.
Mike
