Damionk 06-16-2008, 08:42 AM I was on my way to my dad's with my girlfriend and our kids and we are discussing the pros and cons of hypermiling. I say it's a great way to save money and gas, she says I'm driving like an idiot. Anyways, I am not paying attention to the road and hit a hole....hard. Now my alignment is way off, the car pulls to the right.:(
Chuck 06-16-2008, 09:31 AM I've been there.
Evenings got to tell myself a half mile after getting onto I35E there is a pothole in the rightmost lane.

You think you have it bad with one pothole?
Westbound on I-275 between Fort Thomas and Taylor Mill is so bad in the right lane that I had to change my afternoon commute until they fix it. I'm not surprised they haven't put up a "Rough road ahead" sign yet.

Right Lane Cruiser 06-16-2008, 04:41 PM Yes, but Chuck actually drives INTO the pothole, then back out 0.5mi LATER!!!
;)

She would see it as driving slow would cause other drivers to hit me from behind or something similar. She has told me no HM when she's in the car, so I guess that I'll have to drive more "normal." Although I can still drive the speed limit and do a little DWL so it won't be as bad.
hobbit 06-17-2008, 10:30 AM This is likely to become more and more common as road departments
country-wide become more and more underfunded. The NE roads
took a fair beating over the winter and a lot of it still remains
unrepaired.
.
On the slightly bright side, weaving back and forth in a lane
to avoid or straddle the holes tends to keep the followers at a
slightly greater distance -- especially if they don't have time
to see and avoid a hole I just wiggled a bit to not land in.

Damionk 06-17-2008, 01:03 PM Well I just got a call from my girlfriend and her dad was looking at the car and the damage from when I hit the hole, and there apparently was a tear in the frame already and hitting the hole made it a lot worse so no more highway driving with that car.:mad:
Damionk 06-18-2008, 01:14 PM Well may have some good news....I checked under the car yesterday and it doesn't look like its the frame but there is a good 2-3" crack on what I think to be the axle (I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to cars). I am going to have my brother look at it since he works at a tire shop.
phoebeisis 06-18-2008, 02:30 PM Whoaaaaaa? A tear in the frame or cracked axle?? What kind of pothole does that and what kind of car has a pre-existing tear in the frame?? Frames usually bend or dent; a tear must be in some not too important sheet metal - I hope.
Yes, get that checked.
Luck,
Charlie
Damionk 06-18-2008, 02:35 PM Well the car is 10 years old so its probably wear and tear. To be honest it wasn't exactly a hole it was where the road went suddenly from one lane to two and being distracted talking to my g/f I over looked it and moved over much, much too quickly. But, it was a good 3-4 inch drop.
My wife recently hit a deep pothole, and thought little of it until my daughter called her the next day, broken down in the middle of an intersection.
A $160 tow job, and $209 to replace the broken tie rod.
What exactly were you doing that upset the wife about hypermiling. Seems there are so many things you could do with some gentle moves, that would not upset her, and avoiding the things that do.
P.S. Happy wife, happy life.
Damionk 06-18-2008, 02:48 PM We have already discussed how i drive when she's in the car, and worked that out. When it's just me or me and the kids she doesn't really mind.
HemiSync 06-18-2008, 06:56 PM More reasons to stay single. Thanks! Sometimes I need reminding.
PTDixieGal 06-18-2008, 07:59 PM I feel the pain of having to have that repair done. I won't say that I feel the pain of having a spouse that won't let you hypermile when he/she is in the car because I am single. But I do have family members who won't let me hypermile much when they're in the car with me. But I do some DWL and coasting (not in neutral-that freaks them out).
