Hello!
I'm a new forum member, but I'm certainly no stranger to Hypermiling- I started doing it when I learned to drive in 1988 (On a 1982 Diesel Rabbit! Wish I still had one of the 4 we owned!) My first car was a 1969 Beetle. I could regularly get 35 MPG or more in it, because it had no power steering OR brakes, and the throttle adjustment screw had fallen out- it wouldn't idle. Let off the gas in neutral, and it would shut off.
I currently have a 1996 Dodge Avenger 4-cyl 5-speed, no power accessories. I bought it in 1999, with 28,000 miles on it. Right now, it has just under 79,000. I lightweighted it by taking the rear seat, spare, and a lot of other junk out. I discovered that, since the spare had only been out of the car once since I've owned it, the big nut that holds it to the floor was rusted solid- I had to rip the bracket off the floor to get the tire out, but the bracket is still stuck in the rim hole. Wouldn't do me any good like that! I have a SG-II, but for some reason, it shuts the speedo and odometer on the car off when I plug it in, so I don't use it much in the car.
I bought a 2001 Triumph Sprint RS at the end of April, 2008. It is my 8th bike. All the others were Hondas older than 1984. It has a plug for the SG-II, but it doesn't read the speedo, so I can't get MPG on it. I average 40-45 MPG depending on how I'm riding.
Finally, to justify my FSP- the 1995 Astro AWD. Yes, it only gets 16-18 MPG, even with some hypermiling. However, I bought it in November, 2007, for $750, even though it is in excellent condition, and only has 92,000 miles. In the 7 months I have had it, I have put 2400 miles on it, mostly moving stuff from our old house to our farm. I carry things in it that I couldn't carry in the Avenger at least once a week. In the winter, I will NEED the AWD to get out of our long, unpaved, snow-covered driveway. If I don't NEED to drive it, I don't!
This is a great forum, and has some excellent tips and discussions. I am looking forward to being an active member!
