Hello and welcome to the club.

You should start by knowing your car’s EPA rating located at FuelEconomy.gov (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm) and make sure to read the article “Beating the EPA” (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1510).

Make sure you air your tires up to the maximum pressure indicated on the tire’s sidewall.

Also, consider purchasing a ScanGaugeII (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=103426). It is an invaluable source of information and will quickly pay for itself in fuel savings.

However, please be careful as hypermiling is addictive. :)

Hi TheProphet:

___Welcome to CleanMPG!

___Reid gave out some excellent advice as well!

___I have always wanted to ask, what is the reason for the WRX’s wing with today’s traffic conditions and speed limits?

___Good Luck

thanks for the warm welcome guys

i wish i had the cash for a scan gauge...but for now my boost/vac gauge is my tool for keeping my foot light and staying out of boost

the wing on the STi...(the big huge one) is functional @ 100+MPH, there was a german car mag that did a wind tunnel/track test on the Impreza WRX STi and the Mitsu Evolution 8/9 and it showed the lift/down force on the front/rear of the cars at different speeds and what difference the wing made...i'll have to see if i can dig up the article, as i'm interested in what the numbers were. IIRC the down force was something like 60lbs@100mph

also, there has been many STi/WRX owners that report the rear end getting loose easier at speed without running the big STi wing...on a track of course

i've been reading up on hypermiling, H/O generators and have started reading that EPA article...i'm gonna pull 30mpg on my next monthly 300 mile highway commute!!

max sidewall on the tires - dude !

great paint color - keep it waxed (it won't help that much with the MPG, but the ladies will appreciate it )

Welcome from another '05 STi owner...

I'm also defending the wing! It's esepcially useful for those high speed glides around the offramp ;) I do believe it provides 10 lbs downforce starting as low as 63 MPH.

30 MPG is in reach for the STi. My best efforts netted 29.1 on the last tank.

I've had my scangauge in as well as boost/vac for several trips. The big numbers seem to be with high speed pulse and coast. Accel at -10 to -7 vac, then nice-on coast and repeat.

I think that was his point.. a functional wing slows your Glide..

if it was only a track toy, then fine... but otherwise... lose the wing! (I am a fan of the car, don't get me wrong) and welcome aboard...

I love the stealth front/mount Idea above.... improve your glides and your looks in one big swoop!

On a Turboed car such as the STi, that hood scoop directs about 20% of the airflow onto the turbo housing itself. Without air specifically directed toawrd the turbo, underhood temps will get out of control very fast. This is the same reason the front-intercooled SRT4 and EVO have a hood scoop/vent directing air toward the turbo.
