It seems that efforts to save gas are having an effect with the price of oil dropping from $135 to $127. Once this starts, there will be no stopping it.
Hypermiling is a fun hobby no matter what the price of gas. Once people get into it, they may not stop as prices go down. And it's hard to reverse the purchase of a fuel efficient car.
Keep up the good work everyone. Let's collectively save each other money while enjoying this fun hobby.
The only bad part is, with nomiling I've only put 25 miles on my car in the last week. With hypermiling, it will take forever to get that first fillup to see how I'm doing. I figure about 2 months.
Hi Gershon:
___Nomiling is the best a hypermiler can achieve and oh boy that must be a good feeling not having to go to the station but once every 2 months :D
___Good Luck

gershon, I'm hoping you are a bonafied prophet when you say about oil costs dropping, "Once this starts, there will be no stopping it."
I think I know what you are getting at, if prices quickly drop to $2.00 per gallon, it won't take much time for our fickle nature to drive us back to the SUV store.
Madison Avenue will force us to purchase a guzzler. We won't be able to resist. To prove this bleak outlook, I take you back to the years after 1974.
But you are correct that we Hypermilers will mostly continue the fun we've been having, and even at $2.00 per gallon, getting 100 MPG will be very attractive. I just hope the government will increase funding research and development of alternate fuels, even when the immediate pressure is less.

Gershon, I'm in the same boat. I telecommute, so my car can sit for up to a week at a time. I only take the car when the trip is more than three miles one way or when I have to transport people or things.
Since I live just over half a mile from the supermarket, I walk there and only buy what I can carry home. Yes I end up going more often, but I need the exercise, and it keeps me from buying the high-calorie crap that would defeat the exercise benefit.
So far, I've gone over two weeks since my last gas-up, and I've gone over 300 miles on half a tank. That is an unscientific gage-guess of 33-37mpg. I will wait until I gas up again for the actual number, but considering my combined MPG is supposed to be in the mid-20s, I'm already way ahead.
And as I walk to the local stores, or to visit friends, it feels great to walk right past the car and know it's there if I need it, but I don't need to use it for every trip.
So relax and let time pass without the odometer ticking away. Eventually you will gas up and see your results. In the meantime, if you think in terms of "days per gallon" instead of "miles per gallon", your overall fuel efficiency will be near the top.
Keep up the good work!
Chris

I just got clearance to work a second day at home a week. Sweet! If I can keep this MPG up, that'll save me $11 a week.
