I’m new to hypermiling and Memorial Day holiday was first real chance to get out on the interstate and try some techniques.
The Trip:
Bowling Green, KY to Springfield, TN (birthday party)
Springfield, TN back to Bowling Green, KY (load overnight bags)
Bowling Green, KY to Louisville, KY (stay for 2 nights)
Louisville, KY back to Bowling Green, KY (back home)
The Load:
Me and my girlfriend, and all our stuff. Running with the A/C on using the climate control system. Tires at 40psi.
The Mileage:
Using my SG-II we saw 33mpg for the trip to Springfield. No advanced techniques used a lot of CC and a little DWL.
Driving up to Louisville got a little better 34mpg, traffic was flowing good, and I had a couple of drafting partners. Again no advanced techniques just CC and DWL.
On the way back from Louisville is where it got interesting. I got in behind a semi going a good 70mph he slowed to about 65 going up some hills. So I drafted him the entire way back to BG. I kept what I thought was a safe distance 2-3sec back. My girlfriend approved, so I started to P&G while drafting. Wow that works great! I would DWL up hills and near the crest I would pulse then glide (NICE On) down the other side of the hill, pulling in close to the semi and letting the distance open back up going up the next hill. Here are the results for that trip:

I would never thought I could see 38+mpg out of this car. I was very impressed, as this was with two people, baggage, and A/C on! I’m sure it could have been over 40mpg if I could run with the A/C off, but I had to keep my GF happy! :D
I did 34.98mpg for the weekend! I also got my first 400+ mile tank! And I still had some gas left. :)
