Not sure how to put this...but I have to drive up a fairly steep grade for about a mile, and I am wondering how to put some of these hypermiling techniques to use. I am a newbie, and have just started this so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

No scanguage yet...I suppose that is necessary. My car's internal computer gives MPG and Avg. MPG but not much else.

your mpg gauge will be a lot of help. Perhaps pulse and glide would be a good start. Pick a target top speed and bottom speed (my current favorites are 56-50 or 61-54, depending on conditions). Put you mpg computer to instant mpgs and then pulse up to your speed and then glide back down. Watch the mpg numbers. Doing that yields higher mpg than driving a constant 53 or 58 mph respectively.

A mile of uphill climb means a mile of downhill on the way back. :D Try to do the uphill as efficiently as you can. Try this Autospeed article (http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_110216/article.html) for some ideas to start with. Try to hold it in a high throttle but low rpm position. It's a balancing act, since a little too much throttle can kick it down a gear.

use your iFCD to train yourself on DWL -
I'm still working on my DWL technique but my MPG is improving all the time - last week a trip that typically generated 32 - 33 MPG got me 38 ! simply by refined DWL
pump up tires to max sidewall.
turn off radio - it kills the concentration DWL is quite subtle
