The nation's first commercial plant using wind power to produce hydrogen will be unveiled today near Mountain Home.

Synthetic Energy plans to use a combination of wind power and electricity to produce hydrogen that can be used in chemical manufacturing and oil and gas refining, said Will Hart, a spokesman for Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho. Craig will be on hand at 10 a.m. for a ribbon cutting.

"We're talking a lot about high energy prices these days," Hart said. "Well, this is a project that will use a source of renewable energy to produce another kind of energy."

Hart said Synthetic Energy has a contract to sell the hydrogen it produces to Norco Inc., a Boise-based oxygen company.

The project will cost $1 million. Almost $200,000 of that will come from a grant issued by the U.S. Agriculture Department's Office of Rural Development, Hart said.
