View Full Version : Wear & tear - restart after FAS

I'm wondering what type of restart would cause less overall wear & tear after a FAS & glide?
(1) A conventional start, which may lead to premature wear to the starter, flywheel, battery, and???
(2) Placing the tranny into a high gear and slipping out the clutch just enough to turn the engine over,
then shift into the appropriate gear and then drive on, possibly leading to premature wear to the clutch
and ???

TIA

I have this question also. #2 is called bump starting I believe, and it will cause more wear on clutch, engine mounts, and driveline.

I could be wrong, but I believe it is easier on the clutch to bump start in lower gears. Past that I really don't know.

Thanks for that. Maybe I need to go back and read the bible (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1510) again. :)
Hmmm... I'd think that the slower RPM you 'bump' the engine (higher gears), the less wear to
motor mounts & all... We'll see. I'll try some bumpstarting.

I would vote that the bump start would be less wear and tear. It should be no more damaging than slipping the clutch to get moving from a stop in my opinion. I prefer to bump start in high gears, like 4th of 5th. I think it is less of a shock on the drivetrain because the engine will spin slower and will have much less of a braking effect than in 1st or 2nd.

In reality, neither of the restarting techniques will probably do much in terms of wear and tear, but I like the bump start if possible.

FWIW, I almost always re-start my Insight after a FAS with a bump-start in higher gears then shift to a speed-appropriate gear. Even though the hybrid powertrain makes for easy, low-wear starts, I still prefer the bump-start because it is easier to do and doesn't require me to hit the key. It is easier on the engine/transmission to bump start at a lower RPM (higher gear). I've bump-started the car in 1st a couple of times and it wasn't pretty. I'd only ever do that when hypermiling or low 12V charge dictates.

I've never really thought about the effect on engine mounts though, 30,000 miles of FAS and re-start and I haven't had any issues yet.

I "bump-start" after a fas all the time - I've been doing it for years and the transmission, etc. is still just fine. (I've had starter motors die on me a couple of times and have had to "bump-start" to get it to the shop, anyway!) It is actually easier on everything to do it in a higher gear - try to aim for the gear you would actually be in at the speed you are restarting at. If you're hypermiling that would mean you're aiming for low RPMs anyway. I kind of "ease" the clutch out initially, then do a full release. That allows partial spin-up before you "pop" it. Just don't go too slow with it - after all, you don't want to burn up the clutch!

Thanks, all. I am now armed with info I can put into play tomorrow when I drive to the town where I work
to pick up my other car.

Only question now is, how will SWMBO like the way I pulse the air conditioner on & off? :D

Answer that question at your own peril. Many hypermilers do only mild (DWL, DWB) hypermiling with S.O.s in the car.

Good advice, all...

I am reconsidering using a more encompassing term for SWMB____

R right
B believed
O obeyed
P praised (especially when she buys new shoes, this one pays off)

=SWMBR (respected)

Thankfully, MY SWMBR loves the humor in this term - oh yeah, SWMBC (convinced that i always mean it!)

However, she does think my car looks like !^@%$#% with the wheel skirts, top aero mod, and wheel covers. Now I probably have to explain that with the $4.00/tank I'm saving I'm going to buy her more shoes... Taht or we could take her Jimmy @ 16mph. Wait! Her check engine light came on again today. Honey, should I use that SGII I just bought to help fix your car... AGAIN??? :Banane07:

You all are right, I had it backwards - higher gears are better for bump start. Thanks for the info.
