View Full Version : '09 Vw Tdi 33 & 46 Mpg ??? Vooch 05-22-2008, 07:54 PM In a recent NYT article about the new diesels - they indicated the forthcoming VW TDI (due summer '09) would 'only' get 46 HWY MPG - (thats approx. 55 pre'08 HWY EPA) anyone confirm ? xcel 05-22-2008, 07:59 PM Hi Vooch: ___I saw this earlier this morning and have been trying to get it to the home page all day :( Great find of your own and this is going to place a dent in the TDI nation unfortunately. ___Good Luck ___Wayne Vooch 05-22-2008, 08:06 PM W - the official nos are up on the EPA MPG site - I just checked - the NYT was wrong - I don't have the heart to post 'em here A xcel 05-22-2008, 10:13 PM Hi Vooch: Holy ****, that one is going to hurt. VW must have known but have been telling me and others in the journalist community to expect a whole lot more than 30/41 w/ the stick  ___Good Luck ___Wayne Vooch 05-23-2008, 12:06 AM W. over at the TDIClub they have a few threads with over 100 posts bemoaning the situation. My take is simple - VW should have used the 1.4l instead of the 2.0l TDI engine for the Tier II Bin V programme. At least we can re-calculate the 41HWY times 20% to make it 49.9999999999 MPG to get the real EPA figure - http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/images/smilies/Banane10.gif note - it still is the 4th best MPG of any car listed by the EPA 1) Prius @ 48 2) Honda 3) Smart 4) Jetta Wagon TDI @ 41 seftonm 05-23-2008, 01:41 AM Wow, I just finished reading and looking at the EPA ratings. That really hurts :( I was expecting more, 33/44 was my estimate from a few months ago and I thought that would be about the minimum the car could receive. I have to beat my car senseless to bring it down to the low 30's. Here's hoping that the iDTEC can show some magic and give diesels a good fuel economy image but with even more power than the new TDI that doesn't look very likely:( I suppose these ratings could help my car appreciate in value a little, but this is not at all how I want it to happen. Vooch 05-23-2008, 07:39 AM VW appears to be trying for a more mainstream audience - with this 2.0 TDI - lots of torque and therefore perceived power, perhaps at the expense of hitting the magic 50 MPH HWY number. Mainstream buyers are going to be extremely pleased with a largeish (104" wheelbase) family wagon that averages 35 MPG even with leadfoot driving and 'has a lot of pep'. Look VW could have put in their 105 HP (90kw) TDI powertrain and earned a 60MPG HWY rating - but only Hypermilers would get excited about it. Mike T 06-01-2008, 10:32 PM The older Jettas were lighter, so the enemy is the mass of the car as much as anything else. BTW, 90 kW is ~122 HP DIN, say 120 SAE. Still fourth is not at all bad, on a continent that virtually has no cars that get decent FE. phoebeisis 06-02-2008, 09:38 AM No doubt this vehicle was planned waaaaay before the current runup in Fuel prices.They-VW- went heavier and faster. They didn't see $4.60 diesel in the USA. Diesel was probably $2 when this "upgrade" was planned. Of well, Charlie bestmapman 06-02-2008, 09:52 AM I have the 06 Jetta TDI the old FE figures were 41 highway. The new FE figures are 37 Highway. I can easily get 50 on the highway with minimal effort. So I figure that the new TDI at 41 highway is worth at least5 55 on the highway with minimal effort. toastblows 06-02-2008, 11:17 AM I have the 06 Jetta TDI the old FE figures were 41 highway. Agreed, Even VW's site says the TDI coming out in Sept 08 will get 50s hwy, 40s city. 2008+ EPA numbers are for forrest gump IQ type drivers. 36/44 for my car readjusted....i get 50mpg average....my IQ > 25 though, no offense to anyone getting 36/44 in a 2003 tdi 5spd. Vooch 06-02-2008, 10:00 PM you may have started a new tagline - what's lower ? your IQ or MPG ? xcel 06-02-2008, 10:50 PM Hi Vooch: Aa new tagline – What's lower ? your IQ or MPG ? ___That one would certainly cause a stir ;) ___Good Luck ___Wayne bestmapman 06-02-2008, 10:53 PM Well it looks like we will be upgrading to theTDI sportwagon. The CEO has made her decision. trackermpg 06-03-2008, 12:42 AM what's lower ? your IQ or MPG ? Vooch - Speaking strictly for myself, all I can say is thank goodness for the lowered 2008 epa numbers! vBulletin® v3.6.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
