Hello All,

I have a 2005.5 Jetta TDI (M5). My daily commute is 100miles round trip with 95% hwy driving. The first plan of attack is to slow from 75-80ish to 65 on the interstate, anything slower and I could be killed. ;) Tires are inflated to within 5 psi of max, new air filter, new fuel filter and a light touch on the skinny pedal.

:woot:

PS: How do I get the avg mpg in my sig?

Hi,

Great car. I have an 06 TDI. How are your numbers up to this point.

Last tank was around 43, but I hope to get it much higher.

Once you slow down to 65, you might find that you won't get killed at 60. I learned that only through practice. Sure, I get tailgated at times, but it isn't nearly as bad as I imagined, and the upside has overpowered the downside.

You might want to go ahead and air up to the max pressure. It's not gonna hurt the tires any.

I drove at 65 yesterday on the way home and 65 on my drive in this morning. I found that if a big rig was moving slower then me and I slowed to follow him, then most of the traffic went around without a fuss. So maybe after a few tanks at 65 I will drop down to 60, but interstate 75 in GA most cars are running between 75-90.

I will give that a try on hte next tank to see how much it improves over this tank. Thanks for the advice!!

Welcome to the forums!

I drove from round trip this month, PA to FL all the way at 55 mph and only had one tailgater that was outrageous. If you give it a try you will find you get use to it and the gas savings are amazing. Also according to GA state law (http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/1995_96/leg/fulltext/hb1438.htm), the maximum is 70 mph and as someone once said on these forums, "the speed limit is a limit, not a requirement."

I predict that as the price of gas goes up, the number of people driving for better FE is going to go up and the speed is going to come down. ;)

I hope you are right about everyone slowing down. I was watching a live feed on CNN earlier talking about how as Americans we should be trying to conserve by slowing down and that we don’t have to wait for the politicians in Washington to have an immediate savings in our wallets. Makes perfect sense to me! Maybe we need a bumper sticker that says "Saving the country one mile at a time";)

On this tank applying some of the tips here, my MFD is showing a jump from 47mpg to around 60mpg. Same route, time and distance just the change in my driving habits.

I hope this tank will be the best one yet.

Great work on the mpg! As for bumper stickers, I like that one. I have seen several that I like lately:

I'm saving the earth & strengthening U.S. foreign policy, you?
Oil fuels Terrorism
Don't forget the vasoline, when you get the gasoline.
It's a LIMIT, not a minimum, and not a suggestion.
<-- Faster traffic stay left
Remember when "Speed Limit" meant the FASTEST you should go?
Slow down and save gas
Please pass, I'm saving gas
You can get as close as you want, I'm not going any faster
55 Support the Troops
Hummer Soldiers dying in theirs, so you can drive yours.

Now that last one, while I like it, I wouldn't have the guts to display it.

I have found that one can stay in the Right Lane @ 60 - 65 and not offend other drivers if one observes the following:

1) move toward the right side of the right lane. That signals 'slowqpoke' to most anyone

2) if you see a trucker coming up way behind who is going 70+, put on your flashers - so as to give him time & room to smoothly move over and pass you. I use my flashers a lot on those interstate section where people drive in the right lane 70+

3) if the HWY is crowded and people are driving significantly faster than you are and you are causing a traffic jamb behind you because people (espcially truckers) can't move to pass - then speed up say from 60 to 65 MPH.

Nice work on the increase in MPH - the Mark V is a awesome machine.

I like those and I am with you on the last one. I saw a few that you might like over at www.drive55.org .

Thanks for the tips.

There has only been a few drivers that have been out of line so far at the 65mph mark. I will keep plugging along trying to improve the mileage out of the car. I hope to get an 800+ mile tank out of it trying these tips, but I suspect it will take slowing to 55 to get it.

I love this car and I agree its an amazing machine.

Just filled the tank back up this morning after applying some of the tricks here on the forum.

Here are my results.....

653 miles driven and 12.32 gallons used!!

The tank could have been better..... I made a couple of brisk starts over the weekend that impacted the tank.

Can we say 53 mpg? :Banane06: Nicely done!

Yep...53mpg! Now I just need to resist the urge for the quick start.
