I am picking up a new (to me) car today. It is in great shape, runs very well (better than my 93 Civic), and was incredibly cheap! It has a 5 speed, AC, vent windows, good stereo, new seat covers. Can't wait to see how this car performs as far as mpg are concerned. The fueleconomy.gov website lists it at 31 mpg hwy. Anyone have experience with this type of car and know what it is capable of? As a bonus I already had the Haynes manual for the 3rd Gen Accord! There is a slight issue with the idle. It wants to creep up past 2000 in neutral.

i can't speak for that particular model, but i bought an 85 accord LX new in 1985, and i always like it. they were closer to the size of today's civic, and dependable as could be. i took it on several trips out west from minnesota, and even though i didn't track mileage like i do now, i can remember several fills on the road in which i was in the 40s and even one in the 50s.

i loved that car.......partly because it was blue (i know, silly), but i could go on a 3 week trip and take everything i needed. and at the time, with gas prices what they were, i could drive 5000 miles out there and back for about $125. those were the days.

let us know how it goes for you.

I was rather bummed to learn that the car appears to be carbed, and not fuel injected. Oh well, we'll see how it does.

I got the title today. Actually its an 88, but still no FI. The guy dropped another $50 off the price because his uncle wasn't able to get the idle issue fixed. He said he was sure it was the choke flap diaphragm. Anyone familiar with that? I'll snap some pics of it later.

Ugh. Carburetors on Honda CVCC and later car motors are nightmares!! My family had 80, 81, and 82 Accords, and two of them wound up with carb issues. They are feindishly complex, having about a zillion O-rings here and there, and are a major serious pain to tear apart and put back together correctly. :(

For an injected Accord of the late-80s era, you'd probably be looking for one whose model designation ends in "i", like LX-i. (Which isn't really the question you asked, is it? Sorry!)

Yikes! Guess I'll need to clean off the workbench so I'll have a place to work, eh? Too bad the Honda forum I go to is performance oriented. It would be cool to have a place where I could ask questions and get good advice about the car.

Wish I had done more research on this car before I got it. Looks like soD is on the money about these carbs being a pain. But my neighbor is a mechanic, and hopefully he will give me a hand. I'm not looking for him to fix it, but maybe just a little guidance.
