Hi, I'm a new member. I drive a 1991 Toyota Camry, 4 cyl, automatic, and I'm currently getting 30-32 mpg. It has 160,000+ miles on it.

I drive about 7 miles one way to work on back roads with little traffic.

Welcome to CleanMPG. Your daily commute sounds very MPG friendly if you're willing to put in a bit of effort.

To increase your mileage start by pumping up your tires to max sidewall rating. Be sure to read through Beating the EPA - the Why's and How to Hypermile (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1510) for some valuable information about how the EPA works and how you can work to improve your mileage.

Thanks Ryan. I just looked at the Beating the EPA article and found some new to me techniques! Wow. I'm sharing this with my husband. Many thanks.

I'm enjoying the site. Just wish I had a hybrid now!

Welcome to CleanMPG. The really cool thing about what you'll find here is that the techniques will work on a car that isn't a hybrid as well. Perhaps when it is time to replace your current vehicle you will have the knowledge to squeeze all you can out of a hybrid. If you haven't already done so, add your car to the mileage logs so you can start tracking your progress. Can you tell us a bit about your commute and we'll see if we can help you raise your numbers.

My commute is actually very easy --- back country roads, a few hills, little traffic, I can travel any speed I like. And it is only 7 miles.

That is unless the road is flooded, which it has been several times this spring, and I have to take the four-lane most of the way. I still drive 55 - 60, coast off the exit ramps to the stop sign, and otherwise drive conservatively.

A few days a week I travel into town on my lunch hour because I get bug crazy if I stay in at noon --- so I add miles these days. I try to take back roads rather than the direct 4-lane, coast to stop signs or other stops, and use my brake pedal as little as possible.

I'm going to check the tire pressure this weekend and no doubt will increase the air in my tires. I'm also thinking of turning around in my driveway at night when I return home rather than in the morning when my car is cold --- does that really make a big difference?

Thanks for your attention!

Yes, turning around in your driveway when the car is warmed up does make a quite measurable difference! Sounds like you've got a of potential in your routes. :)
