NEWARK — With gas prices climbing, a Nashport man allegedly figured out a way around the transportation costs that accompanied his secret, and apparently far-ranging, habit.
Gary V. Blackstone, 53, is accused of stealing $30,141 in gas from his employer because he needed the fuel to help him satisfy his addiction to prostitutes, according to court documents.
He was charged with grand theft, a fourth-degree felony, during a bond hearing Friday in Licking County Municipal Court.
On March 14, it was reported to Newark police that a Heath construction company employee had stolen thousands of dollars from the company since November 2004 using a gas card for personal purchases, according to police reports and an affidavit in support of his arrest.
Blackstone, last known address 6595 Ballard Road, spoke with police and allegedly admitted he frequents prostitutes to the point of forming an addiction.
“He said his addiction was the primary reason why he filled up his personal gas tank, because he was traveling so much,” the affidavit from Detective Steve Vanoy reads.
He allegedly told detectives he also used his gas card to open up restrooms at affiliated gas stations so he could have sex with prostitutes inside, the affidavit claims.
Blackstone said he was using the card for his personal vehicle until he quit in March 2008, according to the affidavit.
Judge David Branstool set his bond at $15,000.
