The motto of the annual Great American Smokeout is that if you can quit smoking for a day, you can quit forever. If we could take this idea and apply it to our cars, imagine the impact - to our health, our city's quality of life and the environment.

This is what the Commuter Challenge, which begins on Monday, asks us to do. Rather than driving to work or school, walk, ride your bike, take a bus or carpool.

London's annual bike festival runs the same week, with a week full of events for cyclists of all abilities. You can even get a free bike check-up, available every morning downtown at the Forks of the Thames. More information about these events is available at www.trea.ca.

No one is asking us to quit cars cold turkey. But even George W. Bush has said we must end our addiction to oil. So pick a day or two next week and plan your alternate transportation. You might be surprised how good it feels to be car-free.

just except when you get hit by one. A friend of mine just bought an electric bike to commute a 25 mile trip, and his first impression is that cars are scary when your not in one.

But he's getting uesd to it. As for I its more expensive to bike than to drive at the moment ;)

Hi All:

___I thought this was not only a good story but a well timed one at that. I started sharing the ride in a car pool yesterday. Not my entire distance but 50 miles RT which helps. There is a ride sharing Park and Ride lot for commuters just outside of Joliet, IL. and it works out very well given it is right off the Interstate (about 1.25 miles of FAS opportunity ;)) and is relatively secure. I will loose my warmup route every other day which is going to hurt but losing a 50 mile RT every other day saves a gallon of fuel.

___My carpooling buddy is a friend of mine on the same crew and over day #1, it worked out well. He took in my Warmup P&G and alternate routes without nearly a whimper … yet? As we passed through a local forest preserve, I had the windows down and the birds were singing away. He awoke and said that was a very pleasant way to wake up from a nap! Let us hope he can take it when its 93 in the shade vs. a wonderful 77 - 82 degrees F like yesterday ;)

___Phil, you will be glad to know Jesus (my friend) rode his bicycle to the Park and Ride to be picked up yesterday. He said it was a bit car traffic congested but the ride at 05:30 AM was exhilarating.

___Good Luck

Hi Kevin:

___I can’t wait to tell him that! In all actuality, he drives a gas guzzling Ford F-150 w/ a Triton V8 :( She is good for maybe 15 mpg on a good day … Until I tune him and his machine up a bit that is ;)

___Good Luck

___Wayne
