Knucklehead of the Day

...because everyone believes they are ... Special!

Sighted by: Bailout
Vehicle: Lifted Suburban
Place: Reno, NV.
Date: April 19, 2008

I arrived in the mostly empty parking lot of a Target store early this morning. While walking through the lot I spotted something that made my jaw drop. A lifted Suburban parked in a COMPACT spot. It was so big it spilled over and the right side of the vehicle was over a foot onto the curbing.

As I neared it the owner, his wife and their 2 children approached the truck and started getting in. The owner was right next to me as I passed and I couldn't help but say to him, "Do you understand what "compact" means, man?". He replied, "Yeah, but I don't give a f***. I park where I want.".

This stopped me cold. That whole attitude just reeks of selfishness and he is behaving and speaking this way right in front of his children.

Rather than argue with him I simply backed away, took out my cell phone and prepared to take a shot. When he asked me why I wanted a picture I told him that maybe I'd send it to the RPD (Reno Police), or just post it on the Internet and make him famous for all the wrong reasons. For some reason he took this as a challenge and actually posed for the shot.

While he taunted me for my reusable bag and whatnot I just walked off. As I approached the store entrance I totally lucked out in that a security guard was coming out. I approached him and showed him the picture I just took, and it was a good thing I had done so as the truck had already backed out and was headed in our direction.

The security guard thanked me and headed right for the truck, flagging him down. I was too far away to hear the conversation but the guard was obviously not pleased with the way it was going as he took down their license plate number (both license plates were covered with those illegal tinted and hard-to-focus things that are supposed to fool red light and speed cameras (I guess he doesn't know that the 6 intersections in our town that have such devices aren't functional). Here they are getting scolded.

For the most part I watched from within the store so as to not provoke the guy any further, but once the guard was done and they were headed off I went back outside to make sure they didn't mess with my car or anything (I'm not sure if they knew which was mine, but better safe than sorry). As they passed in front of the store I waved and smiled to them. The wife replied with just a middle finger.

Remedy? Don’t park a Suburban in a compact spot!

Have stories of your own? Send them and your pictures and they will be the next “What were they thinking”!

Good story. I don't know if calling the police would do anything. Parking lots are private property and I don't think you can ticket someone for parking incorrectly on private property. An exception is handicapped spots where it is a law. What surprises me most is that the security guard confronted him on it. The store owners may be able to have him towed, but these laws vary from locality to locality and I am not sure in your area. The guy was basically a knuclehead. Good description.

A suburban in a compact spot is a common sighting near my office in Dallas.

** bailout you're a ****ing *******. The way the guy parked he wasn't doing any harm. Normally they park on the lines in those spots. Take a picture to send it to the cops? **give me a break man.

Sorry just seems like a waste of time to me. What if that security guard got shot or runover?

His posing for you might have been to cover the license plate. Concealing them is apparently a priority for him. I prefer to live in a manner such that I don't mind if the police can read my plates!

Sorry just seems like a waste of time to me. What if that security guard got shot or runover?Anyone notice how the roads have become ruder and more dangerous the past 20 years? We just let stuff like this go and lower the mark...pull over speeder that go 5mph over, then 10, then 15...

Granted, it's not a felony but still indictive of where our society is going.

I guess, you'll have to direct your "reprimand" to me as well, as I would do what Bailout did in heart beat.

Yes, what this family of "knuckle-heads" did is hardly criminal, but our world history is also filled with examples of what happens when we turn a blind eye to "in-our-face" disrespect for rules that benefit us all. Indifference, and even fear of what may happen as a result of enforcing the rules is never a good excuse for not doing the right thing.

Cheers;

Count me in on the 'reprimand' as well... I'm with 'BailOut' on this one...
Absolutely it would have been horrendous had something happened to the security guard, but it is his job to provide 'security' and I believe that handling incedents like this is part of his job description. I hope the next time the guard sees this lifted Suburban he just calls 911 right away and get this knucklehead.

I should have been as fearless last Sunday.

Around lunchtime at the entrance of the SouthFork Hotel, this woman in a doolie is ideling for at least five minutes waiting for Bubba to come out. Got a couple of pictures but neither is great.

I don't know, just seems like he went to far to me is all. This is gonna sound dumb but, to be honest compact parking spots seem like they kind of violate the whole civil rights act to me. Can't have that separate but equal stuff. It makes sense for motorcycle spots, but compact spots? They aren't even that much smaller than regular spots, how much space can they save?

Over the area of a huge car park? Probably loads. It's efficient use of the space they've got.
That jerk on the kerb thinks he's above the law with his gigantic truck and plate covers.
What goes around comes around.

I'm somewhat guilty of this one myself, but I have a compact mini truck..

people would park their SUV too far over,
so I ran it up the curb a little bit so they dont door ding me..

An SUV with a cowl hood and a lift, yeah... Pure performance baby! lol
Anyone ever stop and think that all the auto manufacturers did was remarket the Van?
Van with more doors and windows = SUV in my mind..

Good picture! ;)
