2009 Honda CR-Z sports Hybrid in Tokyo last fall.
Honda Motor Corporations CEO, Takeo Fukui delivered his 2007 year end summary in Tokyo Dec. 19. He reiterated sales forecasts for 2007’s US operations at 1.55 Million units with an expected 3% sales increase to 1.59 Million units in 2008. From one end of the globe to the next, current YTD sales and next years forecasts continue to climb.
Europe’s 2007 sales are forecasted to conclude with 380,000 units, an increase of 27% over 2006 results. Honda expects another 11% rise in sales to 420,000 units in 2008.
Portions of Asia are expected to achieve similar sales results. 2007 sales of 345,000 units up 9% from 2006 and expected sales of 415,000 units in 2008. South America sales are expected to reach 118,000 units, up 30%.
China’s 2007 sales forecast of 420,000 units YTD with an increase of 27% over 2006 results. The 2008 Sales plan forecasts almost 500,000 units, up 17% from 2007.
The only black mark is the Japanese home market. Automobile sales were off 12% to 620,000 units. Even with the introduction of Japan’s Car of the Year, the recently redesigned Honda Fit, no forecast was given for the 2008 calendar year.
Overall, 2007 world wide sales are expected to be up 6% to 3.76 million units vs. 2006.
Fukui also promised to compete with Toyota in the hybrid market in the years ahead.
According to the Honda chief executive, the previous 10 years are only the first phase for hybrid production and sales. The next phase targets the cost competitive economics of buying a hybrid.
"The price needs to be reasonable and fuel efficiency higher so the cost premium the consumer pays for a hybrid car can be returned in a short period of time," Fukui said.
Strengthening Honda’s effort to reduce its environmental footprint.
Hybrid
In addition to the Civic Hybrid, Honda will introduce a dedicated hybrid vehicle in 2009. The new dedicated hybrid electric vehicle will be equipped with a newly developed lightweight and compact IMA system and offered at a more affordable price based on Honda’s efforts to significantly reduce costs. The annual worldwide sales target is 200,000 units with 100,000 to be sold in the US.
The new CR-Z Sports hybrid introduced at the Tokyo Autoshow will be sold globally. With this enhanced hybrid lineup including the current HCH-II, Honda anticipates hybrid models will account for up to 10% of its total global sales by 2010.
Diesel
The second generation iDTEC with higher performance, cleaner emissions and similar fuel economy to today’s current iCDTi will be installed in European models in 2008, US models in 2009, and Japanese models in 2010.
Fuel Cell and Home Energy Station
In November, Honda debuted the all-new FCX Honda Clarity. Leasing of the Clarity in the US will begin in the summer of 2008 and will be continued in the Fall of 2009.
Along with the FCV, Honda has begun experimental operation of the fourth generation Home Energy Station designed to provide fuel for the Hydrogen powered Clarity and co-generation of electricity for the home through a std. natural gas tap.
Solar
In Oct. 2007, a new solar cell production facility called SOLTEC began operation. Full capacity of 27.5 MW’s of solar cells per year should be reached by spring 2008.
Sales of solar cells will be accelerated by increasing the number of distributor locations in Japan from the current 80 to over 200 locations. Honda is currently planning on expanding the solar cell business globally although no time table was given.
