Since Katrina gave us our first $3 pump prices last fall, gasoline consumption in this country has actually risen, confounding the energy experts who recall how much we throttled back on our gas usage following the '70s oil shocks. Where are we burning all this gas? In big, powerful cruisers. One in four new models today comes equipped with a gas-thirsty V-8 engine—which is unchanged from last summer, before gas prices spiked, according to new data from J.D. Power. And some of the best-selling rides on the road today are GM's trio of beefy new SUVs—the Chevy Tahoe, the GMC Yukon and that blingy Escalade, which saw its sales surge 127 percent last month.

This behavior is sooo reminicent of Dilbert's Pointy Haired Boss - thinking they are empowered to break the laws of physics and common sense.

In another era, peer pressure might behoove such whiners to grow up and take responsibility. I'm afraid we have become a nation of spoiled brats. :(

haha i see commericals all the time, gm dodge (except ford suprisingly) giving super rebates and deals for their trucks. I guess they really want to get rid of them before people finds out about the truth about these massive vechicles ;)

Hi All:

___Not to break our backs but even an SUV can get higher FE then one would expect when pushed. Not that 99% of the driving public will but they can?

___With that, those large SUV’s are keeping many an American employed as Terry knows in particular. Not that they are good for the health and safety of the public (they are not for so many reasons) but they do earn $’s for their manufacturers and keep many employed like nothing else. Let us just hope that as those $100 tanks get to those new owners, they will drive those monsters a lot less and take the second and much smaller car in the drive to the store and back or do their commute all the while saving the larger vehicle for when it is actually needed.

___Good Luck

"I like to look down on traffic," says the Grosse Pointe, Mich., real-estate developer, who swapped a 16mpg BMW X5 for a 15mpg Chevy Tahoe. "Besides, gas won't stay above $3 a gallon all summer."

Yeah, I know. :(

In the long term, I hope Detroit transitions most of these SUV drivers into CUVs, station wagons, and large sedans. At some point, GM has to find a way to be profitable making cars, not just trucks. Sorry to the quoted real estate SUV driver - I think you are not realistic about long-term gas price trends.
