I'm surprised that with a 3-cylinder, 1.0L engine its emissions are ULEV-2 instead of at least SULEV-2. The FE rating is attractive, though.

I wonder if I could fit a snowboard in it...

Hi Brian:

___For the SMART's Mitsubishi ICE to nail SULEV-2, it would need a more efficient and expensive CAT and probably a MAF with yet more controls and expense. I asked although most had no idea what I was talking about. The engineers did and came back with the above. Remember a ULEV rated automobile beats the Yaris, ties the Corolla, beats the Fit and non-hybrid Civic if that helps.

___As for a Snowboard, you bet it would with the passenger seat folded forward ;)

___Good Luck

Umm... the Yaris is ULEV-2 while carrying a 1.5L i4. This is why I thought the 1.0L i3 in the Smart should be SULEV-2.

Hi Brian:

___Whoops, the 1.5 in the Yaris matches the SMART and the Corolla. The size of the motor doesn’t matter much in terms of CARB ratings but the CAT, MAF controlling the intake charge and combustion process makes all the difference. Just like Toyota made the Yaris a ULEV while the same block in the Prius-II received the SULEV-2 PZEV treatment, SMART went for the more reasonable cost ULEV treatment as well.

___Good Luck

Cargo Volume (cu. ft.): 12.0

My civic, for comparison:
Luggage Capacity: 11.9 cu. ft.

That's ignoring the back seat, and its fold-down pass-through option, though. I can carry 9-ft lumber if I want. Seriously, though, we have an Odyssey. It'll handle the lumber and the family hauling, this would easily handle me and a laptop and brown-bag lunch. :D

That's what I'm thinking!!! I'd love to give this thing a workout on my normal routes.

Wayne, did Daimler provide the spec for coefficient of drag?

Is the Inline 3 perpindicular with the rear axle? There doesn't look like much room for it to be. That's interesting they made it a RWD vehicle. Atleast maintaining it should be easier (maybe?).

Whoa... I just noticed it uses a different tire sizes in the front and rear. This will make it impossible to do a proper tire rotation.

Hi Darin:

___I have requests in for the tire model (they are Continental’s) but I do not know the model and max sidewall, the Cd and an LCA. I asked the question about the LCA during the theater Q&A and the lead engineer out of Germany said he has that info? Penske thought I was asking about CO2 from tank to wheel and then gave the output for the CDI in Germany  Apparently, SMART is now flooded with requests for the LCA document ;) I do not know when SMART will send back a reply as I asked for those via Phone yesterday and received a call back this morning with only the Brand of tire.

___Kermit, the ICE is mounted just in front of and parallel to the rear axle while the ICE is angled to the rear over the axle. It took me a while digging around MB European media site but I found a pic that best describes what I saw at the preview. I hope the following helps as I could not find a cleaner pic and I did not think to take one myself.

___Brian, the SMART was designed that way purposely. Here was the explanation. With the rear engine design, the weight over the larger tire set allows better overall traction into marginal conditions. The fronts however were spec’ed to be thinner which allows for less traction loss by penetrating into snow and ice deeper for improved steering. As for rotation, I will not do it given the scrub factor messing with FE at each and every swap.

___Good Luck

I'm finding some really good information on the new smart fortwo on this forum. Thought I would add some tire info.

Here's what's written on the US Spec tires (from a photo I took, so not all information is visable):

Rear
ContiProContact

it's too expensive and takes premium gas. i'm waiting for a diesel or flex fuel version, maybe even a small "el camino" style.

A fraction of the price, takes regular gas, and will beat the pants off a smart in the hands of a determined hypermiler. :D
