100 Californian's will be “in charge” of their very own Prius PHEV-20 for upwards of 8-weeks starting next year. (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/in-the-news/t-phevs-going-mainstream-with-the-largest-consumer-research-project-yet-7086.html#post52332)

Professor Andy Frank of UC Davis, commonly known as the father of the PHEV will see first hand a real world PHEV demonstration project bare fruit.

UC Davis is spearheading the largest public PHEV demonstration project to date.

Starting in early 2008 and running over a 2 year period, 10 UC Davis Prius-II PHEV-20 conversions will be loaned to candidates chosen from a list of more than 4 million AAA of Northern California members. To qualify, the AAA member “must” have a parking location with an 110V outlet nearby, “must” plug in their vehicles every night and have a daily RT commute of 20 to 120 miles.

What the demonstration project will include is an assessment from the prospective drivers about their automobile preferences and attitudes before, during and after they drive the PHEV’s. The UC Davis analysis will represent the first comprehensive consumer based report on PHEV’s.
"We know that existing hybrids offer environmental benefits and some savings on fuel costs," said Tom Turrentine, a research scientist at the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies. "Plug-in hybrids offer improvements of those benefits, plus the ability to recharge at home and choice of fuel alternatives. It's your choice every day -- you can choose to use electricity or you can choose to use gasoline."

According to UC Davis, PHEV’s cost approximately $0.027/mile in fuel costs to drive in all-EV mode, compared with $0.07/mile for a conventional hybrid and $0.10/mile for an average gasoline-only car.

The consumer-attitude PHEV research project is supported with $1.8 million from CARB (California Air Resources Board) and main partners Pacific Gas & Electric Co. and the American Automobile Association of Northern California. Other participants in the study include the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas and Electric, South Coast Air Quality Management District, EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) and the US Dept. of Energy.

Surprisingly absent from the list of study sponsors is Toyota? Nissan, Daimler and Ford are providing assistance in support of the project however.
