Debbie Anders’ husband sometimes complains about the bumpy ride in their Ford Escape Hybrid with its highly inflated tires, but “he never complains when the gasoline bill comes in,” says Anders, a service assistant at the UWM Libraries.

That’s because Anders is one of a small but growing number of “hypermilers” –car owners who focus on mpg (miles per gallon) rather than mph (miles per hour).

Hypermilers compete to see who can get the most mileage out of a gallon or tank of gas. Anders, whose online hypermiler name is debbiekatz, and her car took part in the second annual Hybridfest, a hybrid car show and mileage competition held the weekend of July 20 in Madison.… http://www4.uwm.edu/about_uwm/news_press/uwm_news_stories_detail.cfm?customel_datapageid_11602=115264

Since I can't post on the In the News forum, I will put the link for the article here:
http://www4.uwm.edu/

I think she did a good job. She let me review the draft & I made some corrections, gave her the links for HybridFest & the Milwaukee & Madison Hybridgroups in addition to CleanMPG, which she had already included.

It will be interesting to see if any other UWM hybrid owners come forward, either to CleanMPG or to MiHG meetings :)

Quoted because this is being converted to a news article.

What a nice article Debbie, congrats on your achievement and all your new notoriety! ;)

Were you the only female in the Challenge? I was scanning the photos at HF and wondering "wherez the wimmen?"
If so, something really needs to be done next year (cough) right Laurie? :D I'm determined to get out there someday...

Debbie was "Queen of the Hypermilers", there was another woman signed up, but she didn't show.

Great job Debbie, nice article.

Heh, they mention the MPG challenge, that you came in third in your division, and who came in first. I wonder who came in second? ;)

Tarabell, I was trying to think back on whether any other women competed. Debbie might have been the only one. Evan Fusco took a pic of the "leader board" with all the names. Can't remember whether it's posted here or in PriusChat (or both), but if you find it you'll have your answer.

A guy drove from San Diego this year. If he comes next year maybe you can hitch a ride. :)

That would be Willie and his turbo Insight - possibly the fastest 60mpg driver in the world.

Of course we really wanted Laurie to come, but there was a horse show that weekend.

Hi Debbie:

___Great News article and it is so nice to see you again being recognized for all the effort. The FEH community as a whole (not only local but nation wide as of late) owes you a debt of gratitude. Great pic too!

___Good Luck
