The 2007 Toyota Prius. With its award winning Hybrid Synergy Drive, mid-sized interior room and luggage capacity, a real world 50 mpg and low to mid $20K pricing, is it any wonder why sales have increased almost geometrically since its launch in late 2003?

The fuel efficient Hybrids and non-hybrids are continuing to increase overall market share even with gasoline prices moderating below the record highs seen in May.

The Toyota Prius hybrid gas-electric mid-size sedan posted best-ever June sales of 17,756, an increase of 76.3 percent over June of 2006. The Toyota Camry Hybrid reported sales of 5,530 yielding a new monthly total sales record, some 75.6 percent higher then the June 2006 sales period. The third Hybrid standout included the FE/MMH twins with their combined sales of 2,526 units yielding a 29.1 percent gain vs. the same selling period a year ago. It was a pleasant surprise to see the Ford hybrids sales increases at that rate in fact. The HiHy sold 2,403 units, down 38.4 percent. The Lexus RX 400h hybrid reported sales of 1,562 units for the month, up a surprising 25 percent vs. the year ago period. With Honda’s recent announcement that the Honda Accord Hybrid would be discontinued, sales fell yet again to 342 units for a loss of 16.8 percent vs. the year ago period.

For the fuel efficient non-hybrid automobiles, the Corolla continues to lead all sales with sales of 36,499 units for the month of June, a decrease of 5.8 percent from the year-ago period. The non-hybrid standout had to be the Honda Civic with sales totals of 36,512 units, an increase of 33.6 percent over the same June sales period last year. The Toyota Yaris subcompact posted June sales totaling 9,155, an increase of 28 percent over the same.

Overall sales YTD (year to date) of the “Big 7” Hybrids showed an increase of 51.8 percent vs. the year ago period. This is the second month in a row where all 4 of the fuel efficient hybrids including the Prius II, HCH-II, TCH, and FEH saw gains vs. performance hybrids other then the RXh which all saw percentage losses.
