2007 Toyota Prius is the winner.

There are those who doubt man’s role in global climate change, if they concede that such a phenomenon even exists.

Others, perhaps erring on the side of caution, are opting for lifestyle changes designed to protect the environment and reduce use of resources.

The hybrid car, which features both an electric and a gas-powered motor, was designed for better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, and its popularity is growing. Still, detractors have surfaced since mass-market hybrids’ North American introduction early in the decade, suggesting that the benefits offered by the new vehicles may be overstated.

Using the Toyota Prius, the hybrid industry leader, and the gas-powered Toyota Camry, America’s best-selling car for years, let’s look at the pros and cons.

Fuel economy

Pickups and SUVs aside, manufacturers of popular conventionally powered vehicles from midsize on down have been motivated to engineer better mileage into their products. And they’ve done well. It's funny, here the Tribune (in its "SustainableLife" section) posts a glowing review of Toyota hybrid.

Just a few weeks ago, in their "AccelerateTribune" (weekly automotive) section, they panned the Camry Hybrid because of an observed 24.6 mpg while testing and because "smelting of nickel for the batteries poisons the environment":
