This Lexus is a "green" muscle car costing more than $100,000. (http://www.sptimes.com/2007/04/29/Opinion/Wonder_why_this__wond.shtml)

2008 Lexus LS 600h L Hybrid Sedan: The Ultimate Lexus driven by a 438-horsepower V8 w/ hybrid synergy drive powering all 4 wheels. Capable of 0 - 60 in 6.0 seconds and costing a hefty $104,715. Predicted 08 EPA estimates: 20 City/22 highway.

MIAMI - If, like me, you are on the look out for a new, fuel efficient car, it was hard not to notice last week's launch of the latest hybrid from Lexus.

In terms of clean energy engineering, the LS 600h L is perhaps the most interesting auto on the market today. It has been called the first "super ultra low" emissions muscle car. Weighing in at nearly 5, 000 pounds it combines a purring V-8 engine and smooth electric motors with emissions scrubbing technology. But its gas mileage is anemic. More on that in a bit.

With a Himalayan price tag of $104, 000, and its unique "self-parking" feature, you might think the 600h L is one of those outlandish so-called "concept" cars that never actually appear in dealerships. Not so. Lexus actually thinks they will sell, though only 2, 000 are being manufactured so far.

The fact that Lexus would build such a green juggernaut speaks volumes about the confused state of environmentalism in the car industry. It also highlights a dilemma across society today as we try and find a balance between ecological and economic well being.

Some might consider it rather self-defeating to design a clever emissions reduction system, but to then fit it to a high-performance engine in a car weighing more than 2.5 tons. But that's not how it looks to Lexus' parent Toyota Motor Corp., which last week announced itself as the world's top car seller.

To understand the conundrum, I need to explain a little more about the car. From an engineering view, the 600h L is really impressive. The first all-wheel drive hybrid sedan on the market, the combination of its 5.0 liter V-8 engine with the electric drive system makes it far more fuel efficient than a comparable non-hybrid. But that's relative, of course: The EPA gives it a rating of 22 miles-per-gallon on the highway, and 20 in the city.

It also has a "fume-scrubbing" technology that absorbs emissions, meaning it's about 70 percent cleaner than its rivals, the company says … http://www.sptimes.com/2007/04/29/Opinion/Wonder_why_this__wond.shtml

Hmmm....nobody is ever happy....the first hybrids were the Prius and the Insight - they were ripped for being underpowered...Toyota builds the Lexus LS 600h with an emphasis on performance and it gets a bad review....could the real problem be it seems too many people are expecting too much? A variation of what I saw at a repair shop

Pick any Two:

Fuel Economy
Performance
PriceYou can't have all three.

Can I pick FE twice? Seriously, educate the masses and I'm sure things would change quite fast. And I mean really educate them. Not this pussy footed, so-called education system we have. It's more like we are paying taxes for a national daycare system. Several things need to change in our education system, but that's not the point here. People need to learn about the world. Not all this political crap, but about the actual world. It's surprising how many people don't know jack about it. They don't really understand that nature balances everything out.

Ohh well. Seems like it always takes a catastrophe for us Americans to actually do anything. We'll never learn it seems.

I was previledged to ride around with Erick Powers at HF '06 in the previous version of this very automobile. IIRC it was the 600h, but not being a Lexus man, nor keeping up with the latest models on every maker, I'm not sure what the L stands for. Fine piece of machinery, no quarrel.

I can understand that each class of drivers, level of living, whatever you want to call it, needs their hardware to help make their individual contribution, but 20/22 come on!! And why would I be concerned about 0-60, when shopping for a hybrid. I get 17/19 pretty easy, in my full size F150 up and down the interstate at 65mph. And IF, hugh IF, I was going to spend 100k on a new technology vehicle, I would probably lean toward the Tesla.

The collective thinking from the manufacturing end is abit skewed. My point is this: Doesn't do you much good to put passive solar on your house, and leave the doors and windows open. Erect a wind generator, and leave the lights on. I don't recall any propaganda from any automaker saying anything about conservative driving combined with their vehicle will result in x fuel economy.

How 'bout it Lexus, wanna see what she's worth. I promise the back side of the accelerator will never see the carpet!

Hi Randall:

Randall___Perfect analysis ;)

___The L stands for extra long wheelbase and you were probably in the LS 460L with Eric last year? The LS 460 L was rated at 18/27. Although that isn’t great, its FE is as good or better then anything in its class. Decent performance w/ an even faster 0 – 60 in 5.4 seconds for those that care? I just do not believe in a hybrid setup for speed and accel knowing it will never be used in the real world other then for a 6 second thrill ride all the while it will consume fuel at a sickening rate for the other 3,000 + hours it will be in operation. The 600h L is that much worse :(

___Good Luck
