HOUSTON - Oil company ConocoPhillips said Monday it will partner with meat producer Tyson Foods Inc. to make renewable diesel fuel.

The two companies, each among the largest in their industries, said they will use beef, pork and poultry byproduct fat to create the transportation fuel.

ConocoPhillips said Tyson will make capital improvements this summer so that it can start preprocessing animal fat from some of its North American rendering facilities later in the year. Meanwhile, ConocoPhillips said it will make capital expenditures so that it can produce the fuel in several of its refineries.

Hey, every gallon from inside our borders means it doesn't have to come from the middle east or the like!

I used to work as an engineer for IBP 10 years ago, now bought out by Tyson and the source of the majority of beef and pork fat that Tyson will use.

At that time beef fat or tallow was losing favor as a frying oil and efforts to segregate edible from inedible were being dropped as edible wasn't in demand. Only one of our plants in Pasco Washington refined it to the crisco boxes most of us know from working fast food at some point in our lives.

This could be a real coup for Tyson depending on pricing for the other products that all this fat goes to now. Currently it is an undervalued byproduct that has to be sold to someone and soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and cosmetics are a primary end product. I looked at my wife's conditioner and Stearyl Alcohol is the 2nd ingredient, and the 2nd ingredient in my speed stick.

Look for ingredients with Stear in it like stearic acid, sodium stearate, stearamidopropyl dimethyleamine (also in the wife's conditioner), PEG-8 distearate.

If the value of tallow rises sharply because of shortages due to biodiesel, Tyson will likely reduce it's biodiesel production to maximize profits.

Hopefully Tyson/Conoco Phillips has to compete fairly with the alternatives, unfortunately the time is ripe to get the government to dole out subsidies.

In another light, this is still getting fuel from corn, it just takes 15 months for the corn to mature to fat.
