View Full Version : Is there a practical way to convert E10 to E0?

I wanted to start a more constructive version of a thread that's out there on getting the ethanol out of gasoline - if practical.

There is a very long thread on this elsewhere started and maintained by who I suspect is one of the most notorious trollers on the net (http://www.motorsforum.com/toyota/Re-People-who-claim-they-could-build-a-400mpg-Hybrid-amus-94270-.htm), shut down an EV forum, haunted at least half a dozen green car forums.

Anyway, basjoos did suggest soaking chamois leather in gasoline to use as a filter - only the gasoline gets thru.

This might be useful for boat and lawn equipment, and the occasional tank to see the absolute best your car can go.

From the title I thought you meant to eliminate alcohol in gas at the manufacturing level, through legislation.

It's ironic in the max to have subsidized farmers devoting countless acres to corn production, followed by the alcohol extraction infrastrure, and final delivery to consumers who are devising methods to rid their gas of said alcohol.

Probably the easiest and cheapest would be to find a catalyst that would bond with the alcohol in the gasoline and separate the two fuels. Then all you would have to do is syphon off the alcohol and catalyst.

Any Chemists on the board who would like to look into this process?

Add about 1% water and stir and most of the ethanol should separate out. I'm not sure what you'd want to do with the waste ethanol/water mixture.

This is the best way - change the laws.

We never should have been put in a situation to find ethanol-free gasoline like this.

It's interesting to see the Google sponsored links chiming in on the subject ;)

From personal experience, I feel the need to point out that industrial alcohol is denatured (bittered) to prevent that very thing. Although I have seen people running pure E100 take a drink from the tank for a news demonstration.

Here is an link which discusses methods:

Addition of water apparently does cause separation, but you don't know the octane of the resulting product.

In Canada Chevron's highest octane pumps have decals stated there is no alcohol. All other pumps have stickers saying "may contain up to 10% ethanol". So, one solution: pay a 20~30% premium and buy gas with overkill octane.
