NOVELIST Iain Banks has swapped his collection of gas-guzzlers for an eco-friendly motor.
The Scottish writer has opted for a hybrid - thought to be a Toyota Prius - after selling his black convertible Porsche 911.
And to the amazement of his pals, the 52-year-old has also parted with his BMW M5 and his LandRover TD5.
A friend of The Crow Road author said: "Iain has always been concerned about social issues and I think with all the horrors we've been told about global warming, he thought he must do something. So that is why he has taken the plunge and sold his cars.
"I was gobsmacked when he told me. He has certainly put his money where his mouth is. But if Iain says he's going to do something, he always follows it through."
The author is a self-confessed "petrolhead" - although the Prius is no slouch, going from 0-60mph in 10 seconds and having a top speed of 108mph.
The author is thought to have kept his red Honda VFR8-F1 motorbike.
His friend added: "I'm not sure whether he's got rid of the motorbike. That might have been too much of a wrench."
