I was in utter disbelief when I read this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8349923.stm).

Back in 2008 when hypermiling was in the news, hundreds of articles misrepresented this driving as tailgating semis. In an era of fewer print journalists and more blogsters, there was a copycat factor of blindly cutting and pasting the drafting myth. Also, we had more than occasional instances of writers intentionally discrediting hypermiling - even the AAA made a statement condemning hypermiling - we responded (http://www.cleanmpg.com/cmps_index.php?page=AAA). Mythbusters had an episode on this (http://green.autoblog.com/2007/10/28/mythbusters-drafting-10-feet-behind-a-big-rig-will-improve-mile/). I'm sure tailgating semis by hypermilers was slightly more frequent than UFO, Loch Ness, and Elvis sightings.

So is the concept of drafting in traffic dead, buried, damnatio memoriae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damnatio_memoriae)?

No - it's back as an EU-funded project known as Safe Road Trains for the Environment or SARTRE. Just knowning the acronymn honors the French philosopher who was also a Marxist makes this a Communist plot. :p Seriously, there will be trials for three years in the UK, Sweden and Spain. All vehicles in this trial will be wired with sensors and software to safely allow tailgating in a convoy. The convoy will be led by a professional driver in a truck, bus, or taxi - the "train" will have up to eight vehicles on autopilot (except the truck). Cars can join and depart like they would in a bus. Isn't this the destructive conformity or "bad faith" Jean-Paul Sartre spoke against?

Not only is fuel economy expected to be improved by 20%, traffic will be improved, accidents reduced, no infrastructure will be required.

And I thought drafting was too taboo.

I wonder what the distance between the vehicles and the speed is.

And if there are 8 cars directly behind each other and you need to get off the highway...I hope they stay in the passing lane or the middle lanes.

I'll guess at about ten feet between vehicles to allow exits.
