Many dollars will be saved by this department in fuel cost. Imagine the savings realized by the autostop system with the cars left "running!" --Ed.

Henry Countians might have to do a double-take upon seeing the newest addition to the Henry County Sheriff’s Department’s patrol vehicle fleet.

They’ll have to strain to hear it first, though.

Earlier this month, the Sheriff’s Department purchased a 2008 Toyota Prius, a hybrid vehicle that runs on both gasoline and electricity. The car, which had approximately 35,000 miles on it at the time of purchase, cost $14,500.

“(We’re) thinking outside the box,” Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew said of the decision.

“So far, it’s really worked out well as far as room inside the car, acceleration of the car and cost efficiency of it.”

The vehicle can get 51 miles per gallon in the city and has a four-cylinder motor. As an added bonus, the Prius cost a bit less than a typical police vehicle would.

Used police cruisers are usually “somewhere around $16,000,” Belew said, “and they’ve usually got more than thirty-five thousand miles on them.”... http://www.parispi.net/articles/2009/10/27/news/local_news/doc4ae71f4201c60123129769.txt

Wonder if the FBI already some Prii in their Fleet? Nobody would suspect a law enforcement officer in a Prius.

I'm not sure about the FBI, but I sure wish that our local departments had the Prius in their fleets. With the amount of hours the cars are running per day, it would make a definite impact on the budget.
