Daimler’s Orion-VII Diesel-Electric Hybrid on the road.
Daimler Buses of North America has received an initial order of up to 500 more diesel-electric hybrid buses, with options for up to 200 more from King County Metro in Seattle, WA. The base, first year order is for 93 hybrid units.
"We are pleased seeing repeat orders and also seeing new customers joining the Daimler family in our latest wave of bus orders," said Patrick Scully, chief commercial officer for Daimler Buses North America. "We provide a unique advantage for customers by providing a diverse full-line product portfolio that allows customers to work with one, solid company."
The order of Orion VII diesel-electric hybrids from King County of Seattle represents a city dedicated to cleaner public transit solutions. The first year order of hybrid buses will be delivered to Seattle beginning in mid-2010. Other hybrid orders this month includes an order for 80 hybrid buses to OC Transpo, the urban transit service for the City of Ottawa, Canada. This will bring Ottawa's hybrid fleet to 177 Orion buses, making them the third largest hybrid fleet in Canada. Roosevelt Island, N.Y. has ordered one additional hybrid bus as well.
Daimler Orion-VII propulsion details
The Orion VII diesel-electric hybrid transit buses are powered by BAE Systems’ HybriDriveŽ propulsion system. This series hybrid system is driven by a single electric motor that is powered by a diesel-driven generator and an energy storage unit.
A majority of the deliveries previously mentioned will incorporate Li-Ion battery storage technology. The clean-diesel engine is smaller than that used in conventional buses and runs at nearly constant speed for clean operation and optimum efficiency.
To further boost efficiency, the vehicle has a "regenerative braking" system that uses the drive motor to slow the bus, effectively turning the motor into a generator that produces additional current to charge the energy storage system. The feature also reduces brake wear, reducing the need for brake maintenance.
Compared to standard diesel propulsion, these hybrid buses deliver up to 30 percent better fuel economy while greatly reducing emissions: 90 percent less particulate matter, 40 percent less NOx and 30 percent fewer greenhouse gases. Drivers and riders enjoy a quieter, cleaner and smoother ride.
With these latest orders, Daimler Buses will have a total of more than 2,900 units in revenue service or on order for various transit authorities throughout the U.S. and Canada - making it the largest diesel-hybrid bus provider worldwide.
