The Insight proved its crash worthiness in this easily avoidable accident.
Two cars racing each other down Lawrence Expressway in Santa Clara this morning led to a crash that left one driver in critical condition and another wanted by the California Highway Patrol, authorities said.
The two cars - a Ford Mustang and a Ford Thunderbird - were apparently racing at high speed north on Lawrence Expressway just past Homestead Road at 7:19 a.m., officer Steve Perea said. A witness reported seeing the 1980s-style red Mustang veer into the front passenger side of the Thunderbird.
The Thunderbird then crossed over the sidewalk-like median and headed into southbound traffic, Perea said, striking a Honda Insight in the second lane from the right. The Thunderbird spun around several times, and the driver - a 27-year-old man who was not wearing his seat belt - was ejected from the car. He remains in a local hospital with major head trauma, a broken neck and other injuries, Perea said.
The Mustang's driver did not stop, Perea said, and the CHP is investigating the crash as a felony hit-and-run. Red paint on the passenger side of the Thunderbird is consistent with the witness's report, he said.
The driver of the Insight, a 50-year-old woman, was wearing a seat belt and sustained only minor injuries despite the severe impact to her car, Perea said.
Anyone who might have seen the Mustang is asked to call the CHP's San Jose office at (408) 467-5400.
