Detroit Electric from China... weird concept, but might work. --Ed.

The revived Detroit Electric car company -- which is now located in California -- revealed its new partnership with China-based automaker Dongfeng Motor Corporation to research, develop, market, and sell electric vehicles in China.

Detroit Electric's proprietary electric drivetrain will be widely tested and employed by Dongfeng in its own EV models. Per the agreement, another joint-venture company will be established to manufacture and distribute the drivetrain to the Dongfeng Group and other regional carmakers.

Detroit Electric has recently been on a steady growth pattern despite the slumping market trends. Last March, the startup inked a $331 million deal with Malaysia's Proton to utilize the brand's chassis in DE's future vehicles.

Although a significant milestone in the company's evolution, there are still many regulatory and financial obstacles to overcome before any of its vehicles can be sold worldwide.

Officials continue to maintain their initial sales target of 45,000 units across Europe, the U.S., and Asia by 2010. Two years later, that figure is slated to jump up to 270,000 units per year.

Further vehicle specifications, pricing, and availability details have yet to be disclosed. But given its 2010 production deadline, expect such information shortly, so stay tuned. ... http://wot.motortrend.com/6553748/auto-news/detroit-electric-dongfeng-ink-deal-for-evs-in-china-45k-unit-sales-goal-by-10/index.html

China has really been stepping it up in the auto industry. Honda and Toyota were afraid of Kia/Hyundai. Now they should be concerned with Chinese automakers. It's only a matter of time till they start passing crash tests.
