View Full Version : GM goes green with hybrid Hummer

Um... not a solution. --Ed.
Demonstrated to members of Congress yesterday, the Electric Hummer H3 was developed by Raser Technologies and FEV in cooperation with General Motors' Hummer division, and is aimed at that hard-to-please segment of the market that wants to pretend they are in a tank but still think of themselves as nice people.
“Americans value the versatility of trucks and SUVs, the number one selling vehicles in America, but we also want to do what’s right for the environment, said Kraig Higginson, chairman of Raser Technologies. “This vehicle demonstrates that through innovation, we can do both.”
The full-size SUV is a four-wheel drive vehicle claimed to achieve more than 100mpg with a range of up to 40 miles per day in all-electric mode. For longer trips, a small engine kicks in to recharge the batteries. Light, it ain't: the vehicle carries 600 pounds of lithium ion battery packs, but the company claims it delivers better gas fuel economy than a Prius.
Gary Rogers, president of FEV and a member of the National Research Council’s Committee on the Effectiveness of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) Standards, said “Because most Americans drive less than 40 miles a day, this powertrain technology could have an enormous impact reducing the amount of gasoline consumed every day and support President Obama’s initiative to achieve... http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/42538/178/
ksstathead 05-21-2009, 10:21 AM 100 mpg claim is disingenuous, imho.
deezle 05-21-2009, 10:26 AM Ostentatiousness can be electrified. Who knew?
WoodyWoodchuck 05-21-2009, 10:47 AM If Raser Technologies and GM’s Hummer Division can create a Hummer that gets a claimed 100+ mpg, why is the Volt not able to get 100+ mpg also? I realize that they are not in a prime financial position but wouldn’t it look much better to have an actual consumer orientated GM vehicle make this claim also?
ksstathead 05-21-2009, 10:50 AM All we need to know regarding the ICE is mpg once the battery is depleted. More important is AER and kwh during electric mode. The 100 mpg is nothing but algebraic distortion.
PaleMelanesian 05-21-2009, 10:52 AM So, if a Hummer is greener than a Prius, is this thing double-green, or double-ungreen? I'm confused.

'Zactly! I like your setup, too. AER and kwh used to achieve that. Then, standard city and highway epa ratings. Those four numbers tell us all the details. This "100 mpg" tells us nothing.

All-electric and now making comparisons from apples to oranges? If this comes out before the Volt...
ksstathead 05-21-2009, 11:22 AM Of course, a Prius is an actual product you can buy, whereas the EV Hummer is a 2011 product, if ever. Would love to see comparison to a PHEV Prius (and to the Volt).
Also, the batteries in the EV Hummer could power a couple of Volts or a half dozen PHEV Prius. Take that into account and see how green the H3 is.
Indigo 05-21-2009, 11:39 AM So... you can engineer a Hummer to get good gas mileage. But will green Hummer drivers still act like jerk behind the wheel? Hee hee!

For that matter why haven't they put out a 100 MPG...anything else? A PHEV Malibu couldn't stay on the lots.

Malibu, Aveo, HHR...
Anything but this!
JusBringIt 05-21-2009, 03:08 PM Excessive consumption of resources with no particular purpose can be green?
redcranes 05-21-2009, 06:18 PM they just dont get it
Chuck 05-21-2009, 07:08 PM Remember a few days ago about City of Seattle Prius drivers getting 51mpg?
If you factor in this EV Hummer driving until the ICE kicks in for 25 miles, then it gets 33mpg (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30845961/). It's just once again that listing the EV FE alone is misleading on a PHEV.
hobbit 05-21-2009, 07:28 PM This is just a marketing-fluff prototype that's not on dealer
lots yet, right? They'll never build it for real.

Tochatihu 05-21-2009, 07:39 PM I'll take the 600 lbs. of Li ion batteries. Youse guys can divvy up the rest.

Just,,, what if they build it. What then? Still going to hate on it. I had a H2 driver follow me today for 30 miles between 50 and 60 mph. Did not bully me.
Have you seen the Challenger Hybrid in Popsci? I'm sure it falls under the hate guidelines.

Chuck 05-22-2009, 11:22 AM Jeff (and everyone else),
What if this had been an over-the-top blinged vehicle of a televangelist constantly begging for money? Or a (to coin a dated pejorative) "Welfare Cadillac?" Suspect you might be hissed about that because they are using what does not really belong to them and being in your face about it. It's the same message an H2 sends (2 of 3 gallons in it's tank is imported). If one is driving behind me or passes without an attitude, it's no big deal to me, but I hope they trade it in for something more sensible next time.
Yes I know reasoning does not matter - Spock and logic can go straight to Hell and you're hissed. Hope you cool off.
I know you are no fan of big government....neither am I. I'd like to mention an issue that's hurting America just as badly - it's lost it's moral compass just like Rome did in the 3rd and 4th century. Stuff like living within your means, common courtesy, and giving a damn about someone other than yourself. This country had been living beyond it's means with subprime homes, FSPs, companies eager to outsource their staff and it's coming down in this recession. Highways have become more jungle-like with cars that have become more tank-like and have the performance to incite road rage.
I worked at Parkland Hospital in the 90s'. Reminds me of the GM corporate culture: bloated management resistant to necessary change, overprotected labor force that had productivity problems, absolutely no synergy. Jewish friend of mine spent 20 or so years getting out of the Soviet Union. He had a distinct limp, courtesy of the KGB. :( He very secretively wanted to confide with me, conditioned by life in his homeland. Told me job at this hospital was no better than the Soviet Union. :ccry: Told me to get out while I could. I did and since their IT department had been outsourced doubt if any one I knew is still there.
Years ago, a Sunday School teacher commented America without morality is no better than Socialism. It's being proven before our very eyes.
