First responders undergo regular training to stay on top of changing technologies. And that includes hybrid cars.

The vehicles have some hazards that gas-powered cars do not, including higher-voltage batteries and cables that could be a threat if rescue crews come in contact with them. The Burlington Fire Department says it knows of no first responders in Vermont who have been injured answering calls involving hybrid crashes, crediting that to education about the vehicles.

Chief Gary Dillon of the Waterbury Fire Department explains, "It's a matter of knowing how to disconnect [car power sources] and where to cut if you have to extricate someone as opposed to just cutting into a vehicle."

I've helped on several occasions, they aren't afraid of the cars, and they value their training.
