Price drop eases gas pump pinch

http://www.herald-review.com/images/rss.gif (http://www.herald-review.com/?rss=news/local_news)By MIKE FRAZIER - H&R Staff WriterDECATUR - Motorists' spirits are rising as gas prices continue to fall.

"So far, over the last two weeks, prices are down 20 percent, probably," said David Dougherty Jr., owner of D&D Marathon on North Water Street. "It's probably come down roughly 50 cents in the last three weeks."

Prices in Decatur averaged about $2.45 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline Friday, according to AAA's Fuel Gauge Report. Individual pumps in Decatur dipped just below $2.40 per gallon by Friday afternoon.

Last month, Decatur pump prices averaged $3.09 per gallon.

Decatur continues to be below the national average of $2.55 for a gallon of regular gasoline, according to Fuel Gauge Report.

An informal nationwide survey conducted by the North County Times of Escondido, Calif., earlier this week found gas prices ranging from $2.12 at a station in Park Hills, Mo., to an average of $3.53 on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

Californians pay about 61 cents in taxes for every gallon of gasoline. The figure is 9 cents more than the next highest state, Illinois, and almost four times more than the lowest state, Kentucky.

The survey consisted of a sample of gas prices in cities with newspapers in the Lee Enterprises chain. Lee owns 58 daily newspapers across the country, including the Herald & Review, North County Times and St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The survey covered states from New York to Oregon.

Dougherty said local motorists are pleased with the downward trend in prices.

"Most of them got thick-skinned with these high prices the last couple of years," Dougherty said. "Their first reaction was to raise hell, but they realize the guys they're giving money to don't have any control (over gas prices)."

The price of crude oil continues to fall, said Nicole Niemi, a spokeswoman for AAA Chicago. Crude oil prices have dipped from a high of about $78 per barrel, Niemi said. On Friday, prices went below $63 per barrel.

Middle East tensions have eased. In recent weeks, Iran agreed to talks about its nuclear program and a ceasefire was brokered between Israel and Hezbollah, Niemi said. The hurricane season also hasn't been as bad as predicted.

"If the political situation and the weather situation remain stable, gas prices should, also," Niemi said.

Prices typically dip in the fall. Travel generally declines after Labor Day, so demand isn't as high. Pumps will switch to winter fuel blends, which are less expensive to refine, Niemi said.

Still, experts caution, no one has a crystal ball.

"As you know, anything can change," Niemi said.

Hi Terry:

___And to think we were within days of doing just that earlier this year! That was close ;)

___There was Google ad for Proposition 87 (maybe it was 78?) out of California where they wanted to tax the oil producers another $4 billion over so many years which would add even more $’s to the cost of fuel out there. Heaven help Tarabell and Lyeinyoureye :(

___Good Luck

And I thought us folks in the Northeast knew how to tax. My question is, if Kentucky has the lowest tax rate, how come Ohio has the lowest gasoline price in the nation?

I just skimmed an article that the Shell CEO said prices would go down even lower, but would not say how much. Some think it could go as low as $40 a barrel. Lower oil is good for the economy, but I fear complancy on finding new sources of energy and better fuel efficiency.

Now there is talk that in Octobrer gas might go down to $2.00 in some parts of the US - already under $2.30 in Dallas. I still don't think gas guzzlers should think they can party like it's 1999.

Gas in certain areas IS below $2 already. See gaspricewatch.com and cincygasprices.com for the stations which are lowest in the USA as far as I can tell.

Low prices BAD for conservation and for killing the 15 MPG Beasts !!!

lars-ss,

:Banane37: As you just Pointed out in your Post the Larger SUV's are not going away. Not to mention that they now are being designed to run on Multiple Fuels like E-85 Etc. Also they now have the ability to shut down 4-cylinders on a 8-cylinder engine to burn less fuel. They are going to be with us like it or not.

Hi All:

___Last months tank I ran through the Accord costs $3.199 per. Yesterday’s, $2.469. $0.73 in just 5 weeks? Something is screwy … My FE is tanking with the colder temps but with the lower price, I am better spending less overall.

:Banane37: Gas price for 87-Octane here in Franklin, TN. was $2.479 today. It is dropping like every other day. As soon as

you get away from Williamson Cnty. one of the 10 Richest Counties in the USA gas drops down to more like $2.299 or Less per Gallon. All in where you live and whatever the traffic will bear.

re: $1.92 87 octane - I'm in Northern Virginia (just about 40 miles outside of DC)... bummer that it went back up to $2.06 when I filled up on my way home from work this morning.

I know I am probably in the minority, but lower fuel prices seem like a bad thing to me. I think California has the right idea with higher gas taxes. This comes from my buying into both Global warming and Peak oil, if both of these theories are correct (or even if only one of the two is correct, my money would be on GW) then we need to start weaning ourselves of the oil habit, lower fuel prices don't help. When gas prices were at $3/gal not many large SUVs were being purchased. I even have two friends who traded larger vehicles (F150 and medium SUV) for a Civic and Corolla this past summer, that is the direction we need to move in my opinion.
