2009 European Honda Civic iCDTi – Starts at ~ $23,000 USD with large discounts available, easily achieves 70 + mpgUS on the highway and one of the safest compacts on the road anywhere in the world.

European Honda Civic is now rated as one of Europe‘s safest cars.

Euro NCAP’s new rating method focuses on the vehicle's overall safety performance by considering not only occupant protection in frontal, side, pole and rear impacts but also child protection, pedestrian protection and the availability of passive and active driver safety hardware. The Honda Civic has been awarded the maximum 5-star rating with an excellent overall score of 77%.

The new rating scheme, introduced in February 2009 uses a weighted score, combining many aspects of a car's safety performance: adult (50%), child (20%) and pedestrian (20%) protection assessment and the availability of safety assistance devices (10%). A minimum score of 70% overall is necessary to achieve a 5-star rating. To qualify for inclusion, electronic vehicle stability assistance devices (VSA for Honda) must be fitted, as standard across 85% of the European Unions 2009 model range.

Euro NCAP's new assessment has also given the European Accord (TSX here) the same 5 star result.

The new Euro NCAP rating system shows that Honda's long standing in-house crash testing really does improve real world safety. Honda's car-to-car crash test facility at Tochigi analyses impacts between models of different sizes and weights and develop solutions to mitigate injuries for both parties.

All models are equipped with ABS, Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA).

Passive safety has always been paramount at Honda and the Civic has an innovative seat belt reminder system for the rear passengers. The system interprets the opening and closing of the rear doors and displays the rear seat belt sign on the multi-info instrument panel. The SRS unit then determines the status of each seatbelt buckle and sends the information to the display (showing no belts in use, or one, two or three in use). Special attention was also paid to passengers in the front, and both front seats are fitted with double pre-tensioners.

Active front seat headrests play a key role in protecting against whiplash injury in the event of an accident, and the Civic has achieved the highest possible rating in the neck impact alleviation study conducted by the independent research institute, Thatcham.

So, the reason we don't have these is... Supposed pollution? hmmm... 70mpg on the hwy. I'm pretty sure that can't pollute as much as most SUV's.

It's good where CO2 is concerned, but the EPA doesn't like NOx and that's what keeps the Civic i-CTDi out. Euro 5 is much more lenient on NOx than the EPA's Tier 2 Bin 5 standard which the Civic would have to meet. Getting in under Tier 2 Bin 5 requires some expensive exhaust hardware and Honda has decided it's too expensive at the moment.

Do suburbans and F350 duallies meet Tier2Bin5?

Hi Ksstathead:

___Because of the Tier II/Bin loopholes, the 3/4 and up Ton P/U's and SUV's GVWR excludes them from having to meet anything close to Tier II/Bin 5.

___Figures, doesn't it

___Good Luck

Suburban 1500's meet it. 3/4 ton and 1-ton trucks/SUV's/vans are medium duty vehicles and are measured differently. But my guess would be that they don't make it.

Hi Mike:

___The gasoline Suburban’s meet it, not the diesels in any of the P/Us and SUVs. Because of the GVWR, the 3/4 Tons are exempt from Tier II/Bin 5 and only need to meet much higher Bins.

___Good Luck

Just saying its silly you can commute in a fsp with as bad or worse NOx and way worse CO2, but cannot buy a car that helps alot on CO2 and oil imports.

I agree with you on that point. A few years ago, the Jetta TDI could not be sold in California emissions states, but the medium duty pickups with the 6+L diesels could be. That did not make much sense to me either.
