Mayor Phil Gordon wants Phoenix to have a carbon-neutral footprint — a plan that includes painting rooftops white to reflect the sun and using canals for green enterprises.
The Phoenix area can become the Silicon Valley of solar energy, Gordon says.
Gordon wants to attract solar and other renewable energy businesses to the region as well as federal stimulus money for energy research. The city of Phoenix and Greater Phoenix Economic Council already have been recruiting energy firms to locate or invest in the region.
The Phoenix mayor talked up solar and carbon neutrality during his annual State of the City Address in Phoenix Wednesday.
