I'm crying crocodile tears...going 100 in itself won't increase insurance rates or cancel it? In Texas, going over 95 can lead to a night in jail. -- Ed.

Basketball phenom LeBron James has one. As does actor Matt Dillon. So, famously, does politician Al Gore's son.

You may think it's a Bentley, Benz or even a Prius, or the latest celebrity accoutrement, but we're not talking about that. All of these famous individuals have a speeding ticket citation for allegedly driving above 100 mph.

As the three drivers were cited in three different states, they all face varying combinations of penalty fines, courts fees and possible license suspensions. But even if a prospective fine won't hit LeBron's oversized pocketbook too hard, it often adds up to a pretty penny for the average motorist once an insurance adjustment -- or policy cancellation -- is taken into account.

What does it mean to get caught going triple digits? We take a look.… http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/wayoflife/03/04/aa.speeding.ticket/index.html

A decade ago, I was co-teaching a class of international students in Georgia. One Monday morning two students from Brazil were missing, but their three classmates were there. We found out the two missing students were upstate, in court. They'd all rented a car to go to Atlanta for the weekend, and the driver had been ticketed for 100+ mph in some small town. He was in court on Monday to argue his case. (Hindsight tells me he may have been in jail over the weekend.)

On Tuesday, he and the other missing student were back in class. The judge had levied a fine of $650, the largest fine I'd ever heard of for a traffic infraction, at the time.

I just added up what someone could get under similar curcumstances in Norman OK (depends on a few things).

It varied from $1K to just over $2K (depending on whether alchohol was involved).

Remember that for a few "news" outlets, the most important fact was that this 100 mph / DUI / drug bust case involved a major celebrity's offspring.

But for most outlets, and Jay Leno's monologue, the big story was that a Prius could do 100 mph.

"In Florida, a third offense for driving 50 mph over the limit is a felony." 85 in a 35?! That's insane. That should be considered attempted homicide/suicide on the first offense.

Agreed.

The fastest I've ever done is 85 mph on my motorcycle, on the Interstate. Believe me, that's plenty fast. 85 mph in a 30 should result in either jail time, lots of it, or time in the psych ward.
