Honda Motor Co., the only major automaker to expand North American auto output so far this year, is trimming production plans at U.S. plants by 18,000 more vehicles as sales decline.

The reductions include 12,000 light trucks at its Lincoln, Alabama, plant and 6,000 vehicles at factories in Marysville and East Liberty, Ohio, said Ed Miller, a spokesman for the Tokyo- based company. Honda has cut a total of 50,000 units from its U.S. plans since August, he said today in an interview.

"We're responding to the market, and it's about controlling inventory,'' Miller said. No workers will be laid off, he said.

Controlling inventory is a financially responsible move though it means we won't see any deals on Honda hybrids anytime soon unfortunately (with the exception of financing around here).

I saw yesterday Isuzu is laying off 1,400 employees & Mazda isn't renewing contracts for 1,300. All part times. Sooner or later this kind of action has to bleed into the US from Japan.
