Texting while driving is bad, doctors agree... I don't understand how one can think that with concentration and eyes off the road, that they are safe. -- Ed.

WASHINGTON - Tapping out text messages on a cell phone while driving is dangerous, the American Medical Association agreed on Monday, and supported state legislation to ban it.

The group, which represents about 240,000 U.S. physicians, voted to lend its weight to laws that would make it easier for police to pull over drivers who are doing it.

"Texting while driving takes the driver's attention away from the road, which can lead to accidents," said Dr. Peter Carmel, an AMA board member.

"A recent study found that text messaging while driving causes a 400 percent increase in time spent with eyes off the road. No one should have to worry that other drivers are focused on texting instead of traffic. This is about keeping people safe on our roads."

The AMA, meeting in Orlando, Fla., said seven states and Washington, D.C. have bans on text messaging while driving.

Research has shown that talking on cell phones also distracts drivers and can cause more accidents — even with hands-free devices — and the AMA supports laws against doing that, too… http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27650408/

Of course it's dangerous, your mind, eyes and hand is elsewhere other than concentrating on driving and the road ahead. I wonder how are they going to enforce a law against it. Maybe a radar gun that picks up cell phone use in a car?

I remember when my aunt and uncle were over for a holiday a couple of years back, We were driving to a restaurant and they freaked when I picked up my stereo remote control to turn up the volume.

Maybe they could get more people/younger drivers/repeat text message offenders to drive Manual transmission cars, it's difficult enough to sip your coffee let alone text message while driving

I always like updating my blog and doing MSN Messenger while driving. Sometimes I'll set up my laptop so I can read the news or an ebook.

How many people really need to be told that this is a bad idea?

If that's the spirit I might just start doing my yoga routine on my way in to work in the morning, then post a few bills and start on my Christmas list. If the traffic lightens up a bit why not lets all get a chat room going on cleanmpg and exchange some iMPG figures hehe. You're joking right?

Interesting, but I have no problems at all with my coffee in a MT car...

However, most of my driving is outside of any city where I am in 5th gear for extended periods of time. Changing gears while drinking my coffee? Won't happen.
